why don't you listen to the engine and try to pin point the loation of the knocking a bit more. then maybe remove valve covers or whatever covers the noise.

To expand a bit on what ede is telling you to do, try taking a long screwdriver and putting the butt to your ear and the tip of it on different parts of the engine to pin-point the sound. I know it sounds kinda silly and your friends might make fun of you if they watch but it works. Sound travels faster through denser materials (here iron vs air) so it'll give you a better idea of the actual location of the sound. Are you getting any codes? Come back when you pin-point the sound we will be able to be more helpful.

A little better than a screwdriver, well to some at least, is a length of heater hose. I have a 2' section of 5/8" heater hose i use specifically as an automotive stethoscope.

Do you think the bad rod was caused by detonation from playing with timing or something else?
