Yeah, Net is the newer rating w/ all accessories hooked up, actual production exhaust, etc. But it is still at the crank. With the way GM often underates cars, like the GN, TTA, F-bod LS1, etc, it sometimes seems they are rating in RWHP though...

I saw the car and it said " rated at APROXIMETLY 255hp" This is was the sheet on the window of the car said. so its probably close to 275 GM is not very good at giving accurate numbers just look at the TTA and LS-1

Car: 92 Camaro RS
Engine: 305 TBI
Transmission: Manual 5-speed
Axle/Gears: stock
So does that mean that there is still hope for my 92 TBI that was only rated at 170hp?

Well on the topic of rear wheel horspower,
If you ever read motor trend, you would have seen the article about the vette vs. the lighting. They said that GM put numbers of 345 hp. They put the car on the dyno and it made 298.6 hp at the wheels. Which lead me to believe that GM rates their cars at the fly, not the wheels. So are the engines at GM really underated? Only real proof I've seen of underated hp was in the late 60's vette's.

any thing rated before 73 was braking horsepower which was just motor on a dyno. anything after 73(which was SAE net) was motor ,accessories and tranny and hp was measured at the tailshaft of the tranny. EX. i had a 73 nova w/ a 350 2br it was rated at 165hp ,that same motor in 72 was rated at 255hp i have this old! manual that has all specification on domestic manufactures like carb specs, alignment, engine clearences, capacities, ETC! ETC! rear wheel horsepower has kinda been like a booming trend lately which is kinda like a blessing cause know enthusiaist can really find out what works and if the gain was worth COST and for a gearhead on a BUDGET thats very IMPORTANT ... right! whos faster after all the guy who inveted 10K to go 11's or the guy who spent 3500 togo low low 12's. i'm not making excuses for people ..hell give me a **** load of cash and sure i could find more stuff to putt on my car...(great big smile)

How about the HotRod dynotest article?
Same day, on the same dyno testing.
98 LS1 Trans Am. Rated at 305hp. Put down 292hp at the wheels.
98 LS1 Vette. Rated at 345hp. Put down 286 hp at the wheels.
The TA having slightly more hp was just production variance, (plus the rear tranny/torque tube setup in the Vette is said to bleed a little more power) the point is both cars have a 345 hp engine approx and GM underrates the F-bods for whatever reason.
Both where six speed cars BTW, and both had over 5k miles on them. BTW, a 98 Cobra nailed like 265hp at the rear wheels I believe, (rated at 305 hp) so the TA should have been in the same range if it was really only putting out 305 hp at the crank.

IT MAY HAVE BEEN A production variance, they might also rate them lower also...why spend 40K on a vette if you can get the same power for 23K...what difference in perf. is there between a vete and a f-bod through the 1/4 and 0-60????? i think the vettes are lighter and tranny is geared more aggressively.?.

QuickL98, Most Vettes DO NOT weigh less than F-bodies, nor do they have better rear gearing, the MAIN key to them being quicker that F-bodies and other factory cars is the IRS system and how they squat the car and provide BETTER TRACTION and THAT is the key. It is all about traction, look at some mid to high 11 second Vettes on the www.corvetteforum.com , they have built 383's with 345-365 rwhp. TRACTION is the name of the game. Most F-bodies with the same HP and equal gearing will be in the low to mid 12's sometimes high 12's. TRACTION IS EVERYTHING. HTH's

OH....i know that vettes do hook extremely well. i always thought that the tranny was geared lower 1st -3rd...oh well ..i was ..wrong. thank you for clearing that up. when i get some extra cash i'm considering buying those solid LCA's from BMR. i've heard they work well. and traction out of the hole is nonexistent these days with the 355.
