broken bolt in crankshaft

broken bolt in crankshaft

ok i have the worst luck i just broke off harmonic balancer bolt in the crankshaft crap this sucks can anybody tell me a few options i have to fix this or am i screwed hope not i was putting a new summit harmonic damper on and i didnt realize how much thinner it was and kept crankin it all help appreciated :hail:

try a left hand drill. if there's any of the bolt sticking out you can try a pipe wrench, if not enough for a wrench you can weld a nut on the stub and wrench it out. if that doesn't work your only option is to drill and tap it

You did'nt try to install the damper using the damper bolt did you? I've seen this done and the results are usually stripped out crank snout. If you used a damper installer you coul've easily seen how much too long the bolt was, same results with the old wood block and hammer trick Should've easily been visible the bolt was too long.

Ouch. Sounds like you buried the bolt in the end of the threads, right? That could be a tough one.

One of these days I need to market a drill bushing and snout adapter for these problems...

the machine shop i goto has one of thoes... its a little hardend guide he made.. it centers the bit perfectly.

thankfully, i havent had to use it yet.
