one rocker ticking just above idle
It started just last night. You could hear it ticking above idle, but not if you reved it a little higher. The engine rund fine otherwise, I would just like for it to stop. I pulled the valve cover today and set the lash on it. I did it with the engine running and when I did my 1/2 turn past zero lash it would go away for a second then come back. It doesn't do it constantly just like tick......tick.tick.tick........tick.................tick. I pulled off the roller rocker and noticed some play in the trunion, would this cause that. Also the self-alighning "washers" at the tip are damaged from a 7000+ over rev on a missed powershift.
My main question is: Is it the rocker arm or the lifter?
The lifters have run flawlessly for over 10,000 miles. I am getting new rockers anyway and I want to know if I should get some lifters too. OE Hyd/Roller

Most larger then stock cams tend to increase valve train noise. Its annoying and sounds like crap but normal. You can try 3/4 to1 full turn past zero and see what happens and since GM want 1 full turn it might help in other areas.

HA... i just finished this problem on my car about 3 minutes ago!
PROBLEM: ... tick, tick ... tick, just above idle. With the engine warm i took off a valve cover... pushed on each rocker with the coresponding valve closed... one of my rockers could be pushed down by hand where none of the others could, i.e. the lifter on that port was not holding pressure like the others, not compleatly collasped though either.
FIX: COMP gladly sent me a new lifter (actually 2 by accident) with out even seeing a receipt, heck i even told them I bought it from summit, they just got my name and address and shipped it. Swaped it today, even tho when i opened up the intake the engine was cold and the lifter had pressure to it and i could not push it down by hand.
This could be the same problem you are haveing, if you think it may be the rocker, trade it with another one. See if the pressing on the lifter side of the rocker when the valve is closed depresses a lifter, it should not... at least when the engine is warm.
Hope this helps!

I went out and pushed on all the rockers to try to collapse the lifters with the engine warm. Non of them would budge so I figure they are fine. I wiggled on all the rokers side to side, and that one has a lot of play in it. I replaced it with a stock stamped piece and started the motor with the valve cover off and guess what.... no noise! It was super quiet. I guess I found the problem. I put the RR back on and sure enough it started making noise again. My valve train has always been a little noisy and I got used to it, but this was a distinct sound over the usual chatter from the roller rockers. The alignment washers on about 4 of the rockers are loose and one of them even cut a slot into the aluminum! I think it was from valve float at 7000+( tach only reads 7 it may have gone to 7300). It looks like the rocker shifted over and came down on the valve tip on it's washers. I did also check to see if the puchrods were bent, but all were fine. Looks like I should have gotten the MSD 6AL instead of the 6A.

Ok, yeah there is no damage to the head. The studs are pinned and I had the guides cut down for added clearance. My springs are not even close to binding. I am running .492 lift on a spring that doesnt bind til .550 or something.

No way, I checked the nut and it was still tight(poly locks). I readjusted the rockers to zero lash +1/2 turn like I have been doing for ever. I already amgetting new ones in about two days so it should be fine. Thanks
