What rearend will hold up to 425 hp?

Swapping in a new engine, and im trying to figure out what kind of rear end will hold up to over 400 hp and torque? How much will it cost me, and how much is installation typically? Looking for something probably with 3:43-3:73 gears

A 9-bolt will, but you'd might want to rebuild a 10-bolt with some extras to be positive. Obviously a 12-bolt and 9" will...

josh you have the 7.5" 10 bolt. there are a lot of people on here that have had them hold up and last behind strong engines. my son has one in his camaro and it's held up to his abuse so far. his only big problem has been pulling the threads out of the trans where the mount bolts up.

I only need it to last until i can afford a new rear and tranny. Im going to try to be really easy on it untill i have more money...but im just wondering if an occasional stoplight race is gonna blow the rear end.

So would something like a 10 bolt, 8.5" 30 spline limited slip differential be considered "beefing up" a 10 bolt? Or do i have to change the whole rear end out? Theres also a borg & warner 3.08 rear end from an 85 trans am for sale, would that be better then what i have or no? (Besides the gears i mean)

The BW is stronger than the Camaro/Firebird 10-bolt, although maybe not an 8.5" 10-bolt rearend such as from a truck. I've heard there aren't many gear options for the BW rear, though.

Car: 1971 Corvette
Engine: 6.0 LS1 L92 heads sheet metal etc.
Transmission: M21 4-speed
Axle/Gears: 3.36
it will be fine. i beat the hell out of mine whenever possible and it is fine. i have raced with slicks several times and done many donuts on dry parking lots, so don't worry about it. just fix it when it breaks.

I would stongly recommend a 12-bolt or a 9". you could probably pick one up from a junkyard, then weld brackets on to make it fit into the car.

I would just go ahead and spend the money and get a soild 8.8" 12 bolt. That way there are no worried what so ever.

Well a 7.5" will hold up to a fair amount as long as you have street tires, becuase you will lose alot of power in wheelspin. But with slicks, well im pretty sure 425HP would break something...

Car: 84 Z28
Engine: 355 (fastburn heads, LT4 HOT cam)
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 9-bolt, 3.27
I remember the Dana 44 being available as a bolt-in for thirdgens (fourth-gens bolt in the same, but a like an inch or 2 longer.)

I would like to get my hands on one of them! If I remember correctly, they weren't all that expensive either!

Working on:
'84 Z28 LG4 305 with 200,000 original miles!
Added dual elec fans.
145 MPH IROC Speedo
Building 430 HP 350 (ZZ430)
using primarily GMPP parts.
Short block sitting on a stand.

Starting to look like the Kicker poster child!
