auto zone motors
well guys let me tell you i have to replace the motor in my trans am due to a crcked block and i can get an auto zone 350tbi motor through my job for 897 bucks. how are these motors? do they last? i know they give you warrenties but they give them to you on just about everything else too and usually once that warrenty is up it goes bad. i really need to do something soon here but i also need something that is going to last me a while now. thanks

get a 350 instead. should cost the same, replacing a 305 with a 305 is silly.

Must be something wrong with my eyes, looks to me like he said "350tbi" (dogone dyslexia , anyway).
Replacing a TBI engine with a TBI engine is the silly part to me.
Also haven't heard glowing reports of the chain store rebuilds, but that may have something to do with the clientele.
Most places require the core to be like the rebuilt item, and the core needs to be rebuildable. Doing anything else turns into that "honesty" thing.

the price for a 305 OR 350 without tin ware is 897 for me. i have a 305 and i said i wanted a 350. bring in my 305 block and i get that as the core plud the 897 for the 350 motor. but like i said i don't know if i should buy a motor from autozone.. so i'm kinda thinking about getting the 350 L98 block from SDPC and putting my ported and polished 305tpi heads on it, my edelbrock intake manifold and lt1 cam. i already have all the stuff i need to build the L98. with shipping the L98 block comes out to be 1330.00 bucks.

if you look in your local bargain trader... you'll probably find a 383 block for $400-500... everytime i go to the gas station and i have to wait in line, i grab one and look in it to see what they're selling... you'd be suprised.

I would not buy anything rebuilt from any of the major auto parts chains, let alone an engine. Their only goal is to buy the cheapest part they can & resell for the best margin they can, then give you a song & dance about any warranty claim you might have. I'd get an el cheapo $1200 GM crate motor, made in Mexico first.

I have seen a "new" motor from Schucks that was only a year old go boom. The guy tore it apart and it was bored .80 over. I wonder how many times that has been rebuilt......

on another note most chain stores have absolutely nothing to do with the rebuilt products they sell, I'm pretty sure Advance auto uses Jasper as their engine rebuilder for example. Find out who actually rebuilds them, that might yeild better results that way. Then see if you can deal with the company that rebuilds them directly, might get a better price that way.

well autozone uses recon engines and from what i know they are a very good company.i tell you what i will sell you my l-98 that still runs good for 700.00.

I just rebuilt my engine in college and one of my friends rebuilt his, too. He bought his engine from Advance for around $700 and when he tore it apart he found some serious problems. I don't remember quite what they were but he needed a lot of new pieces (they couldn't even be reground or resized). Just be careful, because you usually get what you pay for.
