Smog Pump Squeal!!!
Hey Guys, It has been a long time since I have posted anything here. The IROC has not seen much drive time since school started in Jan but the good old inspection sticker is out and I am back to my same old problem. For some reason I have the worst luck with smog pumps. I bought a new one a year ago after my old one start squealing really bad. After driving on the new one for a week it started squealing. I was told it had a 500 mile break in period. I drove on it for over 3,000 and it never shut up. I finally got another one and it squealed from day one. I finally said to hell with it and took it off after I got inspected and ran without one for the year. Now I need one and the one I have I picked up off ebay. I figued a used one might not squeal... wrong! It has to be on there to pass and honestly I would like to keep it on there since there is no performance gain from taking it off. I have bought a new belt and everything is installed correctly. Has anyone else had this problem with a smog pump???

I didn't realize you guys had inspections out there...
Why does it have to be on to pass? I'm guessing it is a visual thing, not an actual emissions thing. When mine went out, I never hesitated to take it off, despite what I consider to be fairly rigorous emissions tests. It hasn't caused any problems passing the exhaust gas analyzer.

My pump on the 89 LO3 doesnt squeal, it chatters like hell. Its been doing it for some time and its starting to **** me off. Do the pumps usually squeal or do they show other signs of failure?

Well in Austin and in the Dallas area they have a visual inspection and it is fairly obvious when it is gone. I do have good news, the pump is starting to quiet down some. I have been driving on it and driving it hard and it seems like it is helping. As far as the chatter, yes it is starting to fail. The belt I have on it is brand new, like 2 weeks old. I think there is light at the end of the tunnel so hopefully it will shut up all the way in another week or so. Thanks for the input guys.
