Torque from a 305
My 305 TBI is pushing 150,000 miles, so I know a new engine is coming soon. I have limited funds, of course, and I'm looking to build something reliable and very torquey. I like the 305 and wouldnt mind keeping it. My question is....What kind of set-up will give me the best bottom end, and still be allow it to be my daily driver?

You may not realize this but you can easily put together a basic 383 sbc for the same amount of money it would take to either overhaul or soup up your 305. I like the 305 too, but for the money the 383 is a far better choice and no real comparison. The parts for a 383 are not expensive and it does not require any high dollar machining tricks. The Scat 3.75" crank is about the best crank deal for the money at about $300 I think. I also think you can save money by getting the 383 in a kit form as well.
If you want to keep your old 305 block and rods, then that's no problem either as the same Scat crank will go into a 305 block and only require a different damper/balancer and a 400 flexplate... unless you spend the extra $$ for internal balancing.
Either way the 3.75" crank stroke will give you tons of torque and streetability that far exceeds any advertised gains from heads. It will also be more forgiving on tuning and not require stall or gears to get the power from the engine. You can top it off with a $150 or less of swap meet jewels as in Edlebrock carb & dualplane intake.
Once you have the crank in place then the power will be there with pretty much any head you choose. You may wish to port some stock heads yourself which are great for torque & streetability, or if budget allows go for some nice aluminum heads when possible.

N/A runs 10.9 @124, Crack-runs 10.3 @135... haven't run at track since Oct-99

Hey OBD,
Are you using that 3.75 crank in your 305, if so where do i get one and what is needed to put it in?
