HEI or not?

a point was brought up and im curious, my car has no computer, but my igntion coil is on the cap and its a Accel HEI coil, my car runs like crap. Is it possible to run a HEI igntion on non computer cars? I dont know if my car origonally had a comp but whn i got it it didnt.

hei was first installed in 74-75 model years, long before ecm controls

Yes, it is possible to run an HEI ignition without a computer. I have a MSD HEI on my camaro and a Mallory HEI on my caprice. neither of them have computers. What problems are you experiencing?

seems i cant get the timing correct, at first they fixed the choke on my carb, it ran ok, installed new plugs and i thought it was fixed. But whenever i changed the plugs it ran fine for a bit then they became carbon fouled so i dunno whats up. I thought maybe it was my HEI as i dont know much about ignitions stuff

perhaps your running plugs in the wrong heat range. Im not a complete expert myself, but from what i do know, i know that plugs in the wrong heat range can cause problems.

All an HEI needs is a 12v ign source to run.

Is this the stock distributor with an aftermarket coil or an aftermarket accel distributor? The factory CC dis doesent function when the computer is disconnected, well it wont advacne the timing which helps light cruise economy.

stock distributor and accel coil, i use the ac delco plugs all the time.

If your plugs are fouling out, your motor may be running to rich, your coil could be weak, your wires may suck, and your cap and rotor may suck. HEI falls short of enough voltage at high rpm, and when the rotor button thing inside becomes dirty, from carbon tracking, your plugs see less voltage, and hence will help foul them, also too cold of a plug will become fouled over time. Your best bet is to rejet, or retune the carb, and replace the cap and rotor, check your wires, and regap your plugs or buy a hotter heat range.

does it have a vaccum advance on it or a plug just hangin off it? if it does your timing isnt advancing due to the lack of a computer if this was a stock cc carb carb.. need to run a stand hei
