Dig, (Jus' like MudVein)

This cam profile was originally used by Chevrolet in the 1965/67 L-79 327 MT cars, rated at 350 HP.

It's an older factory cam profile that has a maximum RPM range of around 5,200 RPM before power falls off, and valve float around 6,300 RPM with hydraulic flats. The 114° LSA should be fairly compatible with ECM engines meeting emissions standards.

The GM part no. is 3863151. Crane's P/N is 967601 (grind 3863151CR).

This is a rough approximation of the curves:

I love that cam, But nowadays they make alot better ones than that. I am making over 350 hp with that cam in a 283 engine. That little 283 has smoked many of mustangs but it isnt in my ta it is in my 55 chevy.
I am running It 60 over that cam worked 186 heads and early corvette intake. Infact the whole engine it out of a vette originally. it was my dads car.

hey dude guess what i have that same cam in my car (356) 700-r4 and its a touchy cam!it likes timing and a lot of it! i run mine at 11 degrees btdc and its ok but it tells me all the time it needs more like 16 (initial timing!) but i say back i cant afford the gas!! hahahhah!! any how it likes timing and is a really good cam that needs tight rockers!i've had the engine going for about a year now and its decent!!! so just remember lots of timing!!!!! (but try not to detonate !) it could be a comp extreme roller retro fit cam but its a cheap ok cam for the money !

I will soon be able to tell you how good this cam works with modern EFI w/ a blower. But first check out my post. I have my car almost ready just that I have a little problem. Check out my post.

I used to run Crane's blueprint series of the L-79 cam in my '69 Camaro. I have to agree that the more timing you gave it, the happier it seemed to be! One plus to that cam is that is has an incredibly broad power range. My motor pulled really strong all the way from about 2000 to almost 6000 with that cam. Incredible midrange power! I was running it in a 355 with a 650 double pumper, single plane intake, 4-speed, and 3.73 gears. I don't know how well it will work in a fuel injected, supercharged engine, but it's a damn good cam for an older style all around street performance buildup.

Digger,

Your profile mentions a 305 - and I'll presume it's a carbed car.

I have a 327 that originally came with that cam - and the literature published back in 1966 when the cam was new rates peak power at 5,400 RPM.

Two things you should know: that cam, according to the replacement manufacturer, is ground on a 115* LDA - and also, it's seat-to-seat timing indicates 312*.

To find how steep the ramps on the cam are(which tells you how fast the valves open) you subtract .050 duration from Seat-to-seat.

312-222= 90*

That is slow.....very slow.

GM used a grind that would pull from idle to 5,400 RPM.......well, that's pretty good.

But, the exact same 350 engine with a Comp Cams Extreme Energy 274 will make 68 HP more. They've advertised that for 3 years now - and I believe it.

I now have the 274XE cam in that same 327. It is the most versatile cam I've ever had in a street car, pulling hard from 1,700 RPM to 6,800 RPM.

Without knowing the rest of your specs, I'd advise you to look closely at the Comp Extreme line of cams.....people that run them love them. They have hydraulic rollers and a new mechanical flat tappet in the Extreme line now, so your choices are many.

Lastly, I have a buddy with the Extreme 268 hydraulic flat tappet in a 350 Camaro - and it is amazing.....

His call has mountains of torque at 1,200 RPM and pulls thru 6,000. That 268 just might be the best all-around hydraulic flat tappet ever made. Duration at .050 is 224/230, with lift at .477/.480. Your 305 would love it (computer hassles aside - it's ground on a 110* LDA, you'll need 112* or better with a computer).

Good luck.

I agree, XE268 is one of the best all around cams for the money!!! Get the Kit with springs and stuff, too... NICE
