Random stall

I have an 89 RS with a L03 (305 TBI). The car runs great with 170,000 Miles, but once in a while when I come to a complete stop, or when the car is warming up, it will start to stutter for a while and stall. Most of the time it starts back up and it doesn't do it for another month or two. But sometimes when I try to start it after it stalls, it will turn on for about a second or two, stuttering the whole time, then stall again. After letting it sit for about 5 minutes, it will run as if nothing was wrong. Any Ideas?

Also, when I accelerate, I hear a clicking noise coming from the engine. The frequency of the clicks varies depending on RPM, but it is very slow so I'm guessing a single cylinder is making the noise. Don't know if it was related to the previous problem, so I just added it in.

A far as the stalling problem first thing i would check is the ignition module, also might wanna check and make sure your torque converter lockup is functioning correctly.

as far as the noise your describing any number of things really, a sticking lifter, loose valve lash, small exhaust leak.. etc.. just a few things to check....

Thank you for the help...:hail: :hail:

I pretty much ruled out the torque converter lockup because it has stalled while warming up in park. I got a new ignition module from Auto Zone and replaced it in about an hour. To my surprise, after I was done the car started up no problem. I drove it around my town for a while and everything seemed OK....

Although I'm pretty sure the module was causing the problem, it will take me a little while to be sure because it would only stall once every month or two. I'll keep you updated.. thank you again :hail: :hail: :hail:

I was driving along and came to a red light. I was waiting for the light to turn green for about 4 to 6 seconds when blamo, the car stalls. Luckilly it started right back up.

Have you cleaned your throttle body and IAC air passages lately? Idle problems and stumble are frequently related to the IAC and throttle plate leakage.

I had the TB and the injector cleaned out about 6 months ago. Don’t know what an IAC is, and how would I check for a throttle plate leak?

I've also heard that sometimes the distributor bushing wears out and causes a short, I don't know if this is , but I just wanted to run it passed you guys.
