Cam for ZZ4? Is LT4 HOT the way to go?

Hi all,

I have heard that the LT4 HOT cam will realise about 395 HP in the ZZ4. Bear in mind I am carb (running a 750 Holley) What other options are there? The car is really a weekend car and lopey idle won't be much of a problem.

So;

1) What cam shoudl I go for?
2) Do I just buy the cam or do I need new springs etc.
3) How much I am likely to need for both the cam and a garage to fit it?

If I was running a 13.8 before, could I expect low 13's? with the change?

Really appreciate the help guys as the misses has given me the sign off to mod the car Yipee!!!!

Thanks,
Felix

If you decide to go with the LT4 hot cam, your best bet would be to purchase the hot cam kit from Scoggin-Dickey or one of the other GMPP parts places. The kit comes with the cam, springs, retainers, etc. Basically everything you'll need for a hassle free install.

YES get the HOT cam it is great! I've never drivin the ZZ4 but the hot pulls hard and it idles cool too. IMO it's the best Hyd/roller cam out there. I'm only running the 1.5 rockers but it stills dominates at the track, with 1.6's I suspect I will be in the 12's. Get the whole kit from GM, I have comp springs and they work great but I am limited to the 1.5 rockers and .492 lift for now.

There are two ways to go with the HOT cam. You can get just the cam, or you can get the kit (p/n 12480002). The kit includes the cam, 1.6 roller rockers, light weight valve spring caps, special valve springs and a few other items. This kit does not include the roller tappets.

I currently am running the XM270HR cam and it is very similiar to the hot cam, 218/224 durration with .495/.503 lift with a 112 lobe seperation. I wish I would have gone with the XM276HR cam. It is 224/230 duration with .503/.510 lift and 112 lobe seperation.

There is also another grind comp makes that has 110 lobe seperation with similiar specs.

But I would go with 224 deg intake duration if I had it to do over again. But I also have 3.42 gears and a standard.

Yes you can just get the cam, and it will fit and work with your zz4. You may need new springs too run it though, I'm not sure what lift your springs can handle. You should also check the rocker/valve tip pattern when it's back together to make sure you don't need a different length pushrod.

Hotcam-$175
Springs-$55
Intake/Timing chain gaskets-$35

Thats awesome, just in budget. How much will the shop charge to do the work? Is it a days labour? Rough guess??

Thanks

I could do it in about 4-6 hours on your car since it is carbed. Maybe a couple more hours to do the springs. I have no idea what shop rates are over the pond so I won't even speculate as to how much $.
Good luck,
Charlie

Thanks again Charlie,

Just seen this on salee Chevrolet site;

24502586 LT-4 Hot Cam, hydraulic steel roller designed for showroom stock racing.

12370839 1.6 ratio roller rocker arms. Required for the LT-4 Hot Cam.

Will I need that second part too? Am confused and clueless about cams.

Thanks

Sorry,
I haven't been back to this thread for a while. You don't have to buy the rockers. Your stock rockers will be fine. That's what I'm running.

Happy modding,
Charlie
