What causes spark plugs to foul quickly?

What causes spark plugs to foul quickly? My car is an 83 Z-28 305 with a little over a 100,000 miles. The spark plugs foul up pretty quickly. Some get a lot of black oily stuff on them. Thanks

unfortunately, w/ 100 K miles, my guess wouild be your piston rings are shot. It happens, part of the game of high mileage. yOu have oil on ypur plugs from your description.

Oil.

Before my 305 came out, it litterally fouled a brand new set of plugs in 4 hours to the point were they were totally FUBAR.

bad tune up, weak spark, oil leaking into the combustion chamber, wrong plug

Valve seals.

Does it puff blue smoke on startup after the engine has cooled off?
