Strange noise when engine is running?
Ok, I really don't know how to describe it but I was wondering...
It kinda sounds like it is coming from the pullies/belt like something that is moving and is all dry and needs to be oiled. Is there anything in that general area that needs to be lubed ever?
I know this is kinda tuff.... But when I start the car especially its kinda a loud metallic rubbing sound, if that makes any sense. And its fairly loud, loud enough to be easily heard above everything else.
Well I dont think I've described it anywhere near well enough.....oh well.
If you have any idea....let me know.

Engine: Pos 2.8 pulled and replaced with a 350 tpi motor converted to carb.
Transmission: 700r4, vette servo, shift kit, hayden 15"x8" trans cooler.
maybe its your water pump bearing going on you? Mine made a noise like that and thats why it was doing it.

Use an engine stethescope and if you don't have one try a long screwdriver, cut off broom stick or something along those lines (place one end on each component (being careful not to interfere with any moving parts) and the other end against your ear). Listen to each one and determine which is loudest. Check them all because some time the sound radiates throught other parts of the engine. If it's anyone of those components i.e. AC, Water Pump, power steering, smog pump and alternator you will easily identify it using this method. Good Luck!

BTW, when you determine which component it is - replace it. If bearings are bad in any of those you'll want to swap with new or rebuilt parts. Anything up there locks up and throws or breaks the serpentine built you'll be stranded somewhere - not good.

Absolutely, you will here everything going on inside each component. It's very easy, just be careful to stay away from the moving parts. Place the handle of a long screwdriver to your ear and the other end on the housing of the different parts. I use a stethescope now but previously used an old broom handle cut down to about a 1 1/2 foot piece. Worked like a champ.
