i'm building a 350 with ab 9.5:1 compression, 041 heads, probably a comp XE268H cam, shorty headers, an edelbrock performer intake and 600cfm carb. do you think its enough to get a little over 300hp?

With a good "hot" ignition and a bigger carb and maybe equal length tuned headers, Yes! 650-700 cfm

The carb really does hurt performance. I have a 600 Edelbrock and it is a great carb, easy to tune and all that stuff. When I had a slightly better than stock cam and 993 heads the carb performed perfectly. Now that I added heads and more cam the carb holds me back. I run a 14.05 @ 99.7, which is a full second slower than it should run. I believe that the carb and exhaust are robbing that much power. Still have stock exhaust except for the muffler is aftermarket. Another guy on here picked up a bunch of time by swapping from an Edelbrock to a Holley or Demon. Of course you can get your engine built and driving around with the carb and exhaust you have now and upgrade that stuff later. I wouldn't go cheaping out on the rebuild so you can buy a 750 double pumper right now.
