Whining noise from engine compartment.
There is a high pitched whining noise coming from my car. When the hood is open it is louder, therefore I have deduced that it is coming from under the hood. Also, it is present at idle and increases with the rpm. My only guess is the water pump, but I don't want to go replacing parts without knowing for sure.

Sarge,
Other options are the alternator, A.I.R. pump, air conditioner clutch hub bearing, power steering pump, a vacuum hose that is split (in which case the pitch should go DOWN with increased throttle openings), or an engine bearing.
Chances are you can remove the acessory drive belts one at a time and find the offending device.

I don't have a/c and the alternator is new, so hopefully I can rule out those, but I will give it a shot. Thanks for the help.
