Need your opinion

Is it possible for this engine to get to 300hp?

IT is in a 1980 vette, stock L-48 rated at 190hp. The engine has 8.2:1 compression and a cam with a lift of .390/.410 lift.
My friend thinks by adding just headers and exhaust,an intake, and timing it can make 300hp. With the stock cam and heads. Is this possible, a 110 hp gain from those mods, or another overzealous vette owner?

That about covers it. Too many of those people think that wrapping their cast-iron with fiberglass instead of sheet metal somehow instills magical properties into it, and that it will perform supernatural acts.

http://www.compcams.com/Technical/Ca...L/128-169.html Go to the bottom of page 132; look at the numbers for the 929H. Back in the meaningless blue-sky "ratings" days, the factory called that a 350/300; note that in 1972 when they changed to something you could measure on a dyno, it became 350/200. And that was with better heads (461s) than the crap that came on those laughable smogger late 70s dungheaps.

He might, maybe, crack 200 HP with what he's doing, if it's tuned perfectly. Probably not though. I've had enough of those motors to know better.

Smile knowingly, nod approvingly, and then go off in a corner and have a good laugh. It's not worth arguing with somebody that understands that little about what he thinks he's doing. And above all, don't try to "help"; this smells like one of those deals where it will be somebody's fault besides the owner's if it doesn't perform to his expectations, and you'll get roped into twiddling around with it endlessly and pointlessly.

No way! The most I say is about 260-270 and that's with pocket porting the stocks and a good intake and exhaust set up.

In my opinioin, you will not be able to get a 110hp gain from the mods you mentioned. My guess would be that these mods would put you in the 215-230hp range.

So the short answer is... another overzealous vette owner.

to get 300 horse you'd need to pretty much do the entire top end. I'd either get smaller chamber heads, or deck the block to get about 9.5-10.0:1 compression. I'd go with vortechs or old school doublle humps. decent headers with 1 3/4 primarys, and an airgap manifold with a 650 holley avenger. comps 280 series cams would work good. since chevy did install the "good" parts on corvettes, installing an aftermarket intake and exhaust would not be a big enough jump. the cam is better in a dumpster too.

That lame 350 is very similar to the L81. You may get some ideas in this thread:

You know I asked about this a month back. Turrned out our "1980 L42" turned out to be a replacement crate engine. Nothing special about the crate or the L42 probably in the real world the same amount of power. I did a little digging on modding the L42 for max power, basicly what Vader said same as L81. So no those mods wont make 300hp, they will help but nothing major since the L42 has ok stock exh manifolds (compared to our stock logs). Dont just build the top of the engine if its old it probably will act similar to out build, owner killed it in 3 days. As far as the intake, I'm using it on my truck now, it isnt special looks just like an Lg4 intake except its got a few extra numbers on the passenger side.
