New engine...creeking, ticking noises?
I'm getting through assembling my new 383 shortblock..and I now have all the lifters and vavle train set up. But when I slowly turn it over by hand, I kinda hear a little bit of a weird noise that seems to be coming out of the valve train. Sounds kinda like a some ticking or clicking or crunching noise...kinda hard to describe though. For a little insight, I did run into the pushrod clearance problem with the Pro Topline heads that are on there now. I took them off and did the grinding with them still assembled. After that, I went through 4 cans of Carb cleaner and a lot of compressed air to get them clean. They looked to me like i got ever peice of aluminum imaginable out of them before I put them back on. I conversed with my brother about the situation, and he suggeseted that it may either be the lifters or the pushrods bleeding themselves which I agreed may be possible. He also said that it might also be dry vavle seals, which I couldn't think of any reason to rule out why it couldn't be. Do you think that all the carb cleaner that I used on the heads might have f*cked up my valve seals cause I know that carb cleaner and rubber products don't get along very well. Later on tonight I'm gonna shoot them directly with some oil and see what happens. If any has had any experiecne with anything like this, feel free to comment.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. That was another one of my theories. That's probably the first thing that I'm gonna do.

Probabily just as mentioned above. Dry valve springs.
make sure you oil the springs and rockers before you fire it.
these components need oil right away.
An initial dry start can really shorten the life of a rocker arm.
every thiing that moves in an engine needs oil lubrication
Many builders skip pre- oiling the rockers before fireing and engine for the first time Then complain that the rockers are junk when they gall on start up.

Well I dunked all the rockers in oil before I put them on but haven't done anything with the valves springs yet. I'll try it tomorrow and hopefully all will be well.

Hopefully your engine does that all by itself on a more or less regular basis.... the advice in question only applies to a new motor on a stand during build-up.

As funny and true as it may be, I asked the question for some help, not for a wiseguy reply.
