4th gen plastic fuel tank
Ok, I know there was a LONG thread about this a while back in the Body and Interior section, and some of the things that came from this were:
-98+ cars have plastic tanks
-there's some speculation that the filler necks are different lengths
-plastic=lighter, not necessarily good in a rear wheel drive car
-plastic=no rust
-4th gen tanks don't have a return line
-phyisically, 4th gen tanks will fit
But has anyone actually done the swap without swapping in a 4th gen engine? I know Fatal88 has done it, but he swapped in an LT1 when he did it, and later an LS1 I think. Has anyone kept their exhisting third gen engine and successfully swapped a 98+ plastic tank? I want details.
Someone speculated that the opening was the same size and a third gen fuel pump could be used....
Anyone have any information on this?

i couldnt get anyone to reply on a thread that i replied to, so if i dont find out in about 4 weeks im going to go to the junk yard, find the tank, do the conversion my self, make it work, and write a nice tech article, but if anyone else did it save me some headaches.

Good deal. Im thinking about trying it myself. I can see alittle rust on my tank. Mid as well try the plastic one.
However I have heard the sender for the gauge is much different. The ohms it reads are much higher. Have fun making that work.

All LS1 cars came with the plastic gas tank. I am pretty sure my LT1 has the plain old steel one.
The weight difference between the two is negligable. I would not even consider it to be an advantage.
No rust is a good thing so storing your car on an empty tank should not hurt anything.
Some 4th gen tanks DO have a return line. The LS1 cars DO NOT. However the vette LS1's DO. LT1's have a return line just like 3rd gen TBI/TPI cars.
I am not sure on the fitment. I can't see there being any serious difference between the two but those are always famous last words.
