What head/cam/comp ratio combo are you 400 guys running?

I want to put an injected 400 in my car and I'm looking for good combo's. My car is a '40 Ford coupe and I want a good looking, street driveable, 13-sec setup. I have several 400's laying around and one vortec truck engine. I think it would be great to put the vortec heads on the 400, but I'm not sure how long it's gonna be 'til they release the TPI intake for them. Suggestions?

My engine is a 400 with 186 heads and a Comp HR282HR cam; I used 12cc dish pistons, for a CR of about 10.4:1. My estimate is about 425 HP and 450 ft-lbs of torque at the crank, for what any of that is worth. I certainly have no trouble whatsoever nuking the Mustangs on the street, usually hilariously. With those numbers it's obviously not TPI.

A friend of mine and I recently built a 433 for his Blazer with 6085 heads and the same XR282HR cam, and put a Haltech, the Accel DFI intake, somebody's billet 4-barrel throttle body, and 30 lb/hr injectors on it. Someday we'll get some numbers on that one and post them.

How much does your car weigh? That will determine how much motor you need to make it run 13s.

I dont have many mods done to my car yet, but I know what i am going to do (once i get my damned $632 court fine paid off). My 400 is carbureted right now, and im gonna keep it that way since I know how to work on carbed stuff, but I dunno crap about working on fuel injection. I have decided that I want to remove my ECM this summer, too so i can go with a little bigger cam without having to worry about the computer throwing a code. Im gonna get a Summit cam kit which is .46/.48 for $80 with lifters. Then I plan to get a good set of factory or mild ported 350 heads with the steam holes drilled in them, but definitely not the 76cc heads. Alot of internal stuff is the same, though, like weak connecting rods. I would get a good set of conecting rod bolts like ARP. From what I have heard, also, I wouldnt get really high gears, since the 400 is not a high-revving engine. I wouldnt take it past about 5200 RPM, but you really dont need to, since most of its power is beneath that. I have 3.23 gears, and they are great for off the line, but with the TH700R4s overdirve, it doesnt tach too high on the freeway. I cant give you much advice about FI, but you want the heads, intake, and runners ported and polished, as opposed to carbed, where polishing is bad since it helps atomize the fuel more. I would also go with 2.02/1.6 valves to help the engine breathe better.

Track1 heads, Custom comp hydroller with .603 intake and .555 exhaust (magnum intake lobe and extreme exhaust lobe) on a 109LSA with 1.6 rockers. 10.8 to 1 comp
Close to 500 hp.

You could build almost a stock 400 and in a 3rd gen it would run 13s with about a 3.42 gear. A hp to weight ratio of about 1 to 12 is good for a low to mid 13 at about 100 mph

I will add that much more than 300 hp using a tpi is not that easy. The main reason for this is the rate that the torque falls off because of the long tpi runners. You will need 360 ft/lbs of torque at 4500 to get 308 hp

See my sig. Long block is a worn late 70's smogger w/lots of carbon build up on the valves. Intake is Crossfire injection.

This winter it is getting rebuilt with 6" rods. 10.5:1 comp pistons, and AFR 195 heads.

Thanks for the info. My car weighs about 3100 lbs and currently has a 3.50 geared 9 inch Ford rear. It has tall tires, so it's probably equivalent to 3.23's. It sounds like the 400 would work fine with the stock heads and a mild cam if I want to use the TPI.
Are 400's that hard to come by? I find them all the time around San Antonio and the short blocks usually cost about $75 in the junk yard. I've got one in my '34 Chevy, my dad's '40 Ford truck, and a 377 (destroked 400) I've ran for years. I've always wanted to slap a TPI setup on one of them.
