A dealer or locksmith can cut you one by getting the key codes off your lock. Then all they need is a interrogator to figure out your resister pellet value. Going to cost you though, around here you'de spend about $125 for that.

i really need to get a 2nd key made.. JIC...

what i would do if i lost the key:

1. either have a locksmith make a replacement, or replace the lock cyl..

2. i want to retain VATS, there are 20 resistor values. (i think)

i would just unplug the vats lines under the column and use resistors to try to start the car.. once i got the proper resistance, i would get a VATS key like that.

i would NOT bypass VATS... its saved my car once already...

pics of my car with the busted column... they got the ignition on, but VATS kept them from starting it.:

all they got was the stereo head unit.

There are 15 different codes that GM uses in their V.A.T. systems. They are as follows, (1) 402, (2) 523, (3) 681, (4) 887, (5) 1130, (6) 1470, (7)1870, (8) 2370,
(9) 3010, (10) 3740, (11) 4750, (12) 6040, (13) 7500, (14) 9530, (15) 11800.

Each of these resistance values is in OHM's.

When the GM dealer checks for the codes with their interogator. They will start at #1 and check each one until they find the right one. This can sometimes take a while because they have to wait about 5 to 10 minutes for the interogator to reset itself each time if the code is wrong.

PS. If that is the original ignition switch in your car. Your local GM dealer should be able to locate the VAT code using the VIN number.

You can call the dealer and ask him about verifying the VAT code and key configuration from the VIN first. If he says that it can be done , he will probably require some proof (current car registration) that the car is indeed yours. Otherwise, the car will have to be towed to the dealership for them to hook their interogator up to the module to get the right code for the VAT and then pull the ignition switch out for the code stamped on it. A new switch is around $50 - $75.00 and does not come with a coded key. They are separate and run about $25 - $40.00 each and
You will not have to remove the VATS from your car and lose its function. It is not hard to replace the igniton switch if you decide to replace it yourself.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless someone has your key codes on file or your car is less than 10 years old they'll have to get the key codes off the lock cylinder itself.Dealerships usually only keep key codes on microfilm for 10 years. The locksmith or dealership could call chevy with the vin # and get the codes if they're bonded but if it's older than 10 years(which since it's vats i am assuming it is) forget about that. Unless you can find a locksmith that's good at impressioning, it can be done that way too.

Most locksmiths have code books, he might not even have to remove the lock fully to retrieve the codes if he had a dental mirror and a good eye. Either that or he can cut a key by trying a progression chart. Good luck.
