Waterproofing Wire Splices

I have to splice 2 wires at the starter.

I saw some "waterproof" butt connectors at the parts store. Instructions say to apply heat to the butt connector after you install it. Do these things work well?

What about just plain old black electrical tape ?

Thanks

Electrical tape will only be waterproof the first time it gets wet. After that the water will get inside and take the stickiness out.

The proper waterproof connectors work on a heat shrinking principle. Remember when you were a kid and you set plastic on fire? Remember how it changed shape? The idea is the same. When you heat the insulators they mould around the connection and form a waterproof (and in some circumstances, air-tight) seal.

To summerise, yes they work well

heat shrink is the best (only) way to water proof wires, the butt connecters you saw were basically a one step connecter/heat shrink

Vulcanizing tape works but it can be pretty hard to get off.
