AC Delco Oil Filter Change? What's up with this...

I went to pick up a new oil filter for my car today and I typically get the AC Delco PF25 filter for my car. However, today I couldn't find the PF25 on the shelf. So I ask the guy at the counter about it and he says that AC Delco has superceded the PF25 with a PF454. I pick up the new filter and it's shorter. Now what's up with this?? Shorter filter = less filtering of the oil and a slightly lesser capacity of oil .... am I not correct? Why would they do this?

is the 1218 same size or longer than the 25?

i just did an oil change and used the 454. not as efficient filtering but i figured it was ok since i change my oil about every 2500 miles.

A PF35 is the same as the 25 only taller. That's what I'm now using.

The PF454 is also used on the new Vortec 8.1L motors. From a dealership stand point less inventory=less over head. Just a thought.

those without oil cooler can use the pf932. twice the length of the pf25. sits just above the bottom of the oil pan. those with oil cooler use the pf35.

no. don't need one. your filter sits vertical not horizontal.

Just found out last night that the PF35 has been erased as well and cross referenced to an 1118 (I believe that was the number, check before you use it)

Did that include the 35L? That is (was?) a nice item. No drainback valve, but who needs it on a SBC? The 35L has (had?) a glass-fiber element with better filtration.

Interestingly enough I DID see a 35L on the shelves at the local Autozone. I haven't seen a regular 25 or 35 in quite a while, so they might still be around. Is the 35L worth the extra money vs the 1218?

From what I can determine, the 1218 uses a standard AC/Delco can and end cap, a large pleated paper filter element (standard 20 micron, single pass), and a nitrile anti-drainback valve / element end seal on the threaded end of the filter (where it SHOULD be located in a filter that needs the valve). The PF35 is similar, but shorter.

The PF35L uses a spun glass filtration element (more like an industrial hydraulic filter) rated at 12 micron, single pass) and no anti drainback valve. Filters that are installed threaded end up (the way a standard SBC oil filter is mounted) do not require this valve, since the oil can't normally drain upward. The end cap and can are standard, but the filter element is more rigid and withstands higher pressure without distortion better than the paper elements. Those running synthetic oil really should investigate these filters. I get them for only about $7 each, instead of $4.50 for a paper AC PF1218.

If you want a real look at oil filtration, visit www.parker.com - that's their business.

The PF35 is superceded by the PF1218. PF932 is for the med duty trucks & will work if you have the room.

Went to autozone today and picked me up a PF35L (Last one they had). Are they discontinued or not? I saw a bunch of 1218 filters though. Has ac discontinued yet another filter, the PF35L?

On a side note, does the antidrainback valve have any effect on oil flow at all?

If you want more oil capacity (2 qts in filter) use the A/C Delco PF932. Its is longer but is no problem and it adds a total of six qtst
to the crankcase.

The PF35 is still listed as an available filter for the Hummer through 1993 models.

The 1218 is still available:

Hey guys, I changed my oil today before I store the car and I could not find 25 or 35 for the life of me (4 different stores). I talked to the store employee and he told me that the 25 was replaced with the 454. Well the 454 is small. Half the size of the stock P25. They did have the 1218 which is bearly longer then the P25. So I used that, worked pretty well.
