timing question

what could cause an 89 rs [3o5 tbi] to have its timing knocked out 18 degrees? one day it was running great then the next it ran like a mustang. [i suspect a crooked garage that i visited did it when the put in the new plugs]

A loose distributor...a jumped timing chain...a broken/improperly seated rotor...cross firing in the distributor cap...not disconnecting the EST wire when checking the timing
