Stupid, yes...But how do you work a timing light?

I have the idea down and what to do. I have the inductive kind, the one that attaches onto the #1 plug wire. Now, you just put your mark on 0, connect power, start car and pull the trigger? What am i looking for, at, and why? i need help cause i have this new gun and no idea on how to check my timing... you would think near 3k posts i would have found this out... i know about the est wire too.. just need to know what am i looking at.

your light will flash each time the #1 fires, when the light flashes point it to your balancer and find your timing mark (it might be easier to see if you chalk the mark) then you can rotate your distributor till you get it to the degrees you want. just line the mark on the balancer up to your degree pointer to your time each time the light flashes. sorry if that is confusing but the only way i can think to explain it

nope... thats clear to me!!! So, the light flashes when #1 fires right?
so when it flashes, it will show me what * that its at? now i need to be at 6*, so do i put the mark on the balancer at 6* or at 0* and if I wanted to advance it, go to up the "V" that will increase it 2* ever time? sorry if that is confusing.

Good question. I was gonna ask that also.

It sounds like it does. If so, and you bought it on purpose, pat yourself on the back (or any place else if you desire ).

You have a HUGE advantage with that gun. I'll explain more about why you don't need timing tape if you PM me.

Anyway..... All you have to do is aim the gun at the damper, then rotate the dial on the back of the gun until the mark is lined up with 0* on the pointer.

Wherever the dial is pointing, that's what your advance is.

Pretty neat, huh??? :lala:

So loosen the dist hold down, set your dial to 6*, then turn the dist until the mark is lined up to 0*.

Now go play with your gun.

I'm not so concerned about you having 2000+ posts and not knowing how to use a light...more concerned about having 2000+ posts and not knowing how to use the search function

Anyway.

Hook the gun to #1 (and the battery)
Diconnect the EST bypass connector
Start the car, pull the trigger and aim it at the balancer...you'll find a timing tab sticking over the balancer.
Its has numbers on it. Something like:

10 8 6 4 2 0 2 4

Left of 0 is BTDC (where you want to be.

A "line" will appear on the HB, lining up to the timing tab...as the light strobes.

If at 6*BTDC, you're at factory spec.

If not, you need to loosen the distributor hold down bolt and rotae the distributor...you'll see the marrk move to a different number.

ONce you have it where you like, unhook the light, shut the car off, connect the EST and tighten the bolt back down.

I actualy looked up and down at the last few pages on this board... didnt see anything... so i made my own!!

ok... I had my timing checked at TGO nats, and he said to line up the line in the balancer with the 0. Now, that means im at 6* btdc?
I wana see if i can advance it to 10* btdc and hope the computer doesnt slap me on the wrist for doing it... i understand how to advance and retard the timing with the dizzy. I just needed the info on how to read the timing marks really.

Okay, you've got me confused a bit...forget everything everyone has ever told you about how to set your timing, what to look at, etc....except my above post.

I believe if you set it up with the timing mark at TDC then you are at 0*. You would have to advance it to 6*. Correct? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If you shine the gun between the water pump and the timing cover you'll see this.

If the line on the damper is like the pic on the left, your timing is at 0* BTDC.

If it's like the pic on the right, it's 6* BTDC.

Make sense?

one thing abotu that pic bugs me.

if you look at your stock timing tab, notice that there one BIG V and the rest are small.

on the bottom of the big V (the center of it) is 0*..... on that pic, it shows it as being on the top of the peak... and it shows them all being the same size.

you want the bottom of the center V as 0*... then you want to advance it to 6* for TPI... 0* is stock for TBI....
