20w50 oil too heavy for a rebuilt motor??
Hey guys, well, I bought an 89 IROC a few months back and the motor had been rebuilt. The owner at the time was running Kendal 20-50 in it. I thought that was a little high, its now time for an oil change and I wondering what I should do. Stick with it, the car runs great, lots of power and smooth all around. Or should I switch to something else??? She doesn't leak a drop of oil, but that might be due to the heavy oil in the first place. Thanks

Well I have ran 20-50 and sometimes straight 50 in hot summer months durring abusive times (racing) but do not forget it is in there if you live in the snow belt. Starting the engine with 20-50 when it is -10 outside will have you rebuilding it again.

That is too heavy for a street-driven car.
Get the candle-wax out of it, and use 10W-30 synthetic, and by doing so, claim your missing 4 or 5 HP and some gas mileage too.

Awesome..... I was thinking maybe the prev owner was trying to stop an oil leak or something with that heavy a oil in her. People used to tell me to run it in my old 86, but then again she had like 145k miles on the original motor. thanks guys, I will run some 10w30 instead. Castrol or what???

More like the previous owner was trying to stop a bad sound or oil consumption. M1 or AMSOIL if you can swing it.

My moms 02 accord calls for 20w-50. Should I put something else in it in the winter??

After much research and a few blown fresh rebuilds on various types of synthetic I will never again break in a fresh rebuild with any thing but good ole dino and tons of assembly lube on open headers at a 1,800-2,000 rpm free first run for 45 miniutes then chage out with plain old dino oil for the first 1,500 miles.
After that ok yes mobil1 is ok but AMSOIL is the only thing I will ever use again other than dino.
