Strange whining noise
I have this strange whining noise in my 86 IROC (5.0 TPI, 700r4, 3.23 posi, rear disc). Starts off low, then gets louder and higher pitch as I go faster. If I rev the car in neutral, it doesn't do it.
Ideas?

Noise is completely gone in neutral.
Not sure if this is relavent, but my friends and I suspect a previous owner installed a mild shift kit.

Nah I don't think it's exhaust because the noise is gone when I'm in neutral. But it does fluctuate with engine rpm's.

If it doesn't start at one rpm and end at another then you can probably rule your ds out. Might want to look at your diff.

Is it coming from the rear? My rear whined like that, and I found it was pinion bearing. Not a hard job - took me 2 hrs. alone in the yard.

Hey Mikes86SC - did you ever figure this problem out? My 88 IROC 700r4 does the exact same thing. It whines when in gear, but not in Park or nuetral and the pitch of the whine changes with engine rpm.
Another weird thing is the shifter will not allow the tranny to go into park. It makes me think that the cable is loose because I have to shift past the gear I want and then bring the shifter back until it locks on the gear I want.
I am more concerned about the whine though.
