How much $ to go 383 or 388??

While I am rebuilding my engine from nos mishap, I am wondering how much it would cost me to just go stoker. I will be using camel hump heads, vic jr intake, and a cam to match.Which is better 383 or 388?

Let's see, a 383 or 388. Basically the same, just differnt bore over. You can get a great stroker kit from www.speedomotive.com but on the heads, they are great for torque. On the old days, they were great. Compared to now day technology, get a set of Sportsman II's or Dart Iron Eagles. Something in the 200cc runner area and 64cc combustion chambers.
The intake would be a bad idea in my opinion. Why? You build a 383 for low end torque, but will hurt it by putting an intake that is the RPM range from 3500-8000.
Get an RPM intake, it will give you the best throttle response and will pull to 6500, which is plenty for a 383, trust me. I had #186 doublehump heads, so been there done that.

Good luck!

Unless you have already reconditioned those camelback heads, I would suggest selling them to someone looking for "vintage" pieces for their classic car and buying a set of aftermarkets like the World Products heads, or some Dart Iron Eagle castings. They flow better than the camelbacks, and wouldn't require the extra work of reconditioning. When it is all said and done, your camelbacks will probably cost you $300 to $400 to get rebuilt, whereas a new casting that offers superior flow, will cost $650. Subtract $100 for the money you get by selling the camelbacks, and you are within $100.

All IMHO, of course. I've been there with a set of 305 castings: I have $460 tied up into them!

If you go 388 have the block sonic tested.

I can't stress this enough. Only overbore as much as is needed to clean up the cylinder walls, overboring is not for getting you HP, just wasting money if not needed!
