Okay... having a MAJOR starting problem...

Okay... I'm kinda embarassed to ask such a plain question. I'll just start pouring out the problems.

Ever since the heavy rains last week and the installation of K&N filters, my car has been extremely hard to start cold and just difficult when warmed up. I have to step on the gas while cranking for it to start. However, once I take my foot off the gas (quickly off or slowly off, it doesn't matter) it'll stall. It takes me about 10 minutes of this 'game' until the car finally keeps its idle. There is a strong smell of gas from the exhaust during all this startup stuff. What should be the first place for me to check? My first guess is that water may have gotten into the distributor and causing problems. Does the IAC thingy have any possible role in this? There are so many things that can cause this type of problem, but I do not want to tear into the engine trying to find the problem. What are the basic things that I need to check for this kinda thing? Thanks...

Welll lets see what you have done lately.
First I'd check the timing.
And do a tune up if yu haven't done one in the past 6 months. That is cap, rotor, spark plugs, wires and set the timing.
Also check the TPS Voltage and don't forget the oil change.
If you still hav the problem I would try replacing the O2 sensor.
As fo rthe the IAC thingy I have no idea about that.
Good Luck!

My car just had a 30K tune-up 1000 miles ago(about 2 months ago). But, I'm willing to do that again to make this embarassing problem to go away. I'll go thru what Ski89Z28 said and hopefully find the problem.

bad@ss92camaro - My car is a TPI. It doesn't have a choke. But I see what you're thinking. I'll look into that too.

Choke ? Think before you open you reply. This is a TPI car. Says so in his signature.

Hummer,

Remove the air filter. Try starting the engine again. The poly/cotton of the K&N filter will retain moisture and effectively choke your engine.

Waiting for results...

Vader - You want me to try starting it without any kind of air filter in there? Just want to make sure.

Hummer,

Yes. Just don't run it that way for a few thousand miles. You are only testing at this point. Once you determine whether the air filter element is waterlogged or not, you can take appropriate action.

It does the same things as before... It'll rev up if I step on the gas as I crank the engine. But dies when I take my foot off. The gas smell from the exhaust is still there.

Man! What a wonderful car problem to tackle!

I would check your TPS voltage. It should be about .54 volts with the throttle closed. A high voltage would cause the injectors to add more fuel. When you step on the throttle during starting, enough air may be entering the engine to allow the excess fuel to ignite.

BTW... how much do those Auto Xrays Scanners usually run about? I'm thinking about getting one. It'll be nice to know what my car is doing.

This might not help, but it is cheap and worth a try. Lately, the 91 has been not wanting to start for like 5 seconds of cranking. It will start right up if I give it some gas. I checked the PCV valve and found there to be a hole in the side.
Bought a new one, and now it is running perfect again. Only cost like 1.80 too.

I had a similar problem with mine, it would do the same thing, but it would also try and die while i was driving down the street, I ended up having to replace the computer. Have you check for codes?
