Tell me about pickup coils, reluctors, and main shafts please!

Ok I'm trying to revamp my ignition system to make sure its solid and in good condition, so I thought of the obvious: replace the coil, cap, rotor, wires, plugs. I was told I didnt really need to replace the distributor but after reading around I'm picking up names like "pickup coil", "reluctor", and "main shaft" that may need to be changed?? Please tell me what these are and if I need to replace them. IF I do, where do I get the right parts and what brand should I get? Thanks guys.

The reluctor wheel and the pick-up coil work together like a tiny generator. The reluctor is mounted to the distributor shaft and spins with the shaft.
As it spins, it comes real close to the pick-up coil. As each of the eight teeth on the reluctor wheel pass by the pick-up coil, it generates a small amount of current flow in the pick-up coil. The ign module senses that signal and fires the coil at the right time for the spark plugs.

Not much point in replacing the reluctor wheel unless its physically broken. Same for the pick-up coil; it generally works or it doesn't work.

The stock HEI dist works well up to abt 6500 RPM.
If you plan on exceeding that, an MSD ign sys would be beneficial.

Main shaft?? Humm, must be the dist shaft they're talking abt.
Not much to go wrong there either. A worn bushing will allow the shaft to wobble side to side. If thats the case, you'll need another dist.

Thanks for the reply. I hope you're right about not needing to change out the pickup coil at least, I've heard of guys who either choose to or need to replace them often. I'll just go for it and If I still have problems I may change it out. Thanks for the help.
