Should I buy a 5spd 92 305 TPI?

I'm looking to upgrade to a faster car and I'm limited to under $6,000. I want to get a 5 spd and all 3rd gen manuals come with the 305 TPI. I keep hearing people say that the 305's suck. They are ratted at 230@4200(HP) 300@3200(TQ), the 350 245@4400(HP) 345@3200(TQ). Not bad.

The car I had in mind is a 92 25th Anniversary 305 TPI, 5spd
Is this car able to keep up with a say, a '90 GT Mustang?

Any owners of a similar car out there? Do all 3rd gens come with a digital dash (i.e.
tach, speedo)? Any comments are welcomed!

I'd say try to find a 90 model or so, unless you just want the ground efects, that way you should have maybe a thousand to play with.
Stock for stock,no, but if you did all the free mods and an exhaust(headers back)then I'd say you should beat him if it's auto andif it's a 5spd too then you should be right there with him enless he's got some good gears and traction. Really depends on the driver more though.

I say go for it, if it is in decent shape that would be a good platform to start out with and future upgrades will be simpler. I have the 305 and I love it. Bone stock there is not that much difference in power between the 350 and the 305. The basic car is a big plus but if you are considering 400+HP in the future you may want to keep an eye out for a 350.

LOL yea a Z28 5speed 25th would be nice! But I doubt if you find a good one that it will cost 6,000. Atleast not around here. I got my 92 RS for 5,000 and its in ALMOST perfect shape. My mom thought it was a 00 car! It is a nice car! Only thing it is missing is the T-Tops. Oh well maybe next time. But really I dont think you will find a good shape 25th for 6,000. But hey, I might be wrong! Hope I am...well actually I dont hope Im wrong cause then Ill be jelous as hell!

i think it is a good purchase since it will be uncommon and fun to drive. whether or not you can beat a stock 5.0 mustang depends on the person behind the wheel of the mustang, whether or not it's an lx or gt, and the options. either way you'll have them in style, stopping, and handling.

Before I got my car (92 RS), I looked forever to try and find a 91-92 Z28 305 TPI 5-speed. I couldn't find one. They are some of rarest thirdgens out there. But also the nicest. They were just as fast as a stock Mustang 5.0.

BTW, not all 305's were TPI. Some were TBI with 170 HP and 255 torque.

Overall, I still love my car, but I sure do wish that it was a Z.

Car: '92 Z28; Dk Teal; Her Pkg
Engine: 305

I have a dark teal metallic '92 Z28 305 TPI 5 spd car. If you can find one, i'd say go for it! Mine runs high 12's on the motor & low 12's with 90 hp NOS - & that's with the stock (ported) iron heads. 305's can be made to run great! Actually, the '91 & '92 Z28 models were probably some of the fastest third gens from the factory, running in the 14's stock - excluding the '89 turbo TA, that is.........

Go for it!!! The 5 speed 305's are quick it is the autos that suck because they have a peanut cam in them.

Make sure you're getting a 5spd car that has dual cats. Otherwise you'll be stuck w/ the peanut cammed 205 hp 305 TPI usually associated w/ the automatic tranny (for 90-92 that is. If you get a 89 305 TPI 5spd you automatically get the better cam, and then dual cats are merely a 10hp option accompaning better gears. 87-88 there were no dual cats, but again 5spd TPIs got the better cam.)

The 230hp 5spd, 3.4x geared cars are a very good match for the 5.0 Stangs.

BTW, Someone needs to punch the owner of that 92Z in the mouth, and teach him how the hell to spell CamAro, lol.
