1. fill your gas tank
2. write down starting milage
3. drive
4. go get gas
5. record milage at time of filling
6. record gallons of gas put into car
7. find difference between starting milage and end milage
8. take that number and divide by the number of gallons added to car at fill up.

the best thing to do is to keep a running log and then do a total mileage (over say a few months or so) it gives a better average.

Ok, I filled up and drove .3 miles and needed to put .019 gallons back in.
Milage was 105,670.4 and now it is 105,670.7.

Now what do I do?

okay mpg is miles per gallon so take the miles part and divide it by the gallons part. And just so you don't have to worry about where you put the decimal place or getting out a calculator you get 15.7 mpg according to that.

Btw did you just drive down the street and gas up at the next station?
