cam swap, questions

I have an 87+up L98 350 with roller cam. I'm putting in a more radical flat tappet, I read that all I have to do is get standard length pushrods, it that true? Is the stock timing chain compatible? Has anyone done this? Thanks.

I'm not for sure, but don't you have to change the lifters? And they may not fit in the lifter bores because roller lifters (and their bores) are not perfectly round, they have a flat spot on each side so the lifter doesn't go in crooked. But like I said, I'm not sure... I'm sure someone else around here could enlighten us, though.

I'm not worried about the knock my engine is completely manual. I was wondering if there is a difference between the timing chains also. Do you think I'll be able to use a non roller type 350 timing chain?

Yes you do have to change the lifters, but I'm pretty sure they'll fit.

If you use a flat-tappet cam, you'll have to get a timing chain for a pre-87 engine. The crank gear is the same, but the cam gear has a similar, but different, bolt pattern. I've seen it first hand, having accidently bought a pre-87 timing set for my '88 305...

When I buy the gasket kit can I interchange gaskets since I have an 87+up engine but I use 55-85 valve cover gaskets?

Yup, the timing chains are different. So far, you need: Timing chain for SBC I, Flat tappet hydraulic lifters, 7.794" long pushrods and the cam. Why not just stick with a roller cam, more aggresive profile with less duration, less heat due to reduced friction?

Don't get me wrong I love the roller one but it just isn't big enough. The cost doesn't justify the power I would only get like 10hp at the most. I priced the swap with the flat tappet to be only 195 bucks. Now if I got a roller:

LT4 hot cam kit: 335 (my price)
(any other would be 250 cam and 75 springs)
lifters : 170 (mine tick)
timing chain : 75
gaskets : 40
+____
620
That's 425 bucks more.

Go to the GM parts direct website, the link is on one of my posts a little farther down, this site realy changed my thinking of going to regular old hydolic cam, ZZ-3 cam for $159,the ZZ-4 springs for around $25 a set(ordered by twos)$2.95 per cylender.
The tpis cataloug has ALUMINUM roller rockers for $124 bucks 1.5s or 1.6s.
Shop around before ditching the roller setup.
Also I've heard of a guy I believe his name is something like Chet Hurburt, that grinds his own cams for around $160, I was told his ad can be found in National Dragster cataloug
but I can't find the cataloug yet.
Good luck.
