305, One tough little motor!!!
Ok as of yesterday this is the Second time my 305 TBi has overheated!! Completly bone dry of coolant and low on oil. I killed just getting of the interstate and at first it turned slowwwww, then started very hesitant, but I was in a bad part of the neighbor hood and had to get home. This motor now burns a little oil when I start up, and when I hit the gas!! And until about 6 months ago it use to run on one quart of oil until I found out that the oil pressure sending unit was leaking. I am always having coolant leaks and can never seem get them to stop!!! How much more abuse can this tough little motor take?? Oh and it was two BAD overheads, not counting the not so bad ones. With all this overheating do the crank etc get weaker??? When can I expect this motor to quit???

Hehe, sounds just like my 305, ive peged the redline on the coolent temp a few times, and still with over 184,000 that little 305 keeps a running. There built tough. Just keep that oil clean and changed and she'll last you forever. later, Jimmy

Mine has overheated twice, once with a coolant hose to plenum leaking, and once with radiator leak. It redlined both times and still runs good. They are tough engines.

My last '92 RS overheated BAD right in front of the Chevy dealer's service door!! They changed the alternator under warranty, but the tech forgot to hook up the fan turn on lead by the battery. They had the car sitting there running while I settled up with the cashier, and then I saw the techs running out to my car as steam was billowing from under the hood!! DOH!! The coolant was literally boiling inside the recovery tank.
Bottom line is that the car ran just fine for several years after that...then I sold it and have seen it several times since. Yours should be fine, just don't let it happen again....

I could not tell If I redline or not, cuz the gauge does not work, I can usually tell when I smell something Burning and I either head POP (upper radiator hose blew just about the whole length), and when It kills on me and does not want to turn over because everything is swelling up from the heat. The Oil I use is Royal Purple, stuff is pretty good I guess!!! I have a 350 block, but am not ready for the swap!! Also is the 350 such a tough little motor?!?!?! or do they blow up unlike the 305??? Maybe the 350 might be faster, but the 305 will last longer! lol
