305 to 350 swap looks like it is going to happen! w/in

Hey guys, looks like the motor swap will probably take place. just a few questions though. it has an hei distributer in the new block, with a holley 3310 carb. what would i need to do too hook up the hei? i dont plan on using the computer at all, if i can help it. i will leave everything intact however until all the bugs are worked out and i find that it WILL pass emmisions. i dont have any doubts that it will. also, any suggestions would be helpful. me and about 4 other friends plan on doing this in a weekend. its an auto tranny, so i should just have to hook up the auto fly wheel. other than that, should i keep the a/c or not? :-D

also, i forgot to say anything- i dont know what year block this is, however it does have a 1 piece rear main seal and a roller cam from my understanding. Will i be able to take all the accesoris, ie alternator and powersteering pump off of the 305 and place them on the 350? all the bolt hole i would think shoudl be the same. i plan on double checking this by taking a visual look at it, but everything should match up yes no?

everything should match up fine. you might find that the hole in th head for the temp sender is a different size, but beyond that, if it's a complete one piece seal engine, then bolt it up.

The electrical connectors that go to the cap on the regular HEI, power and tach, are the same on the computer HEI. You won't have anything for the 4-wire connector that goes from the harness to the CC distributor base to hook on to your new one, but that's not a problem. The present carb electrical connections won't be used except for the choke thermostat.

I don't know for sure, but your throttle and tranny TV cable may not hook up directly, either.

If it works, keep the AC. Why not have it available? It doesn't make that much of a difference otherwise.

Good luck passing emissions. You'd flunk visual here in a heartbeat. They wouldn't even let you go to the sniffer. Since the SES light comes on without the CC connections, you'd either flunk for it being on all the time, or if you take out the bulb, for it not coming on before the engine is started. If you kept the computer equipment, then you'd probably pass. But, that's here, not necessarily there.

well, i run a cat, the headers i have are the tes edlebrocks with the air pump fittings. i will install all the bracket so that if CT ever goes to a visual inspection i can put the air pump back on. my buddy has a pretty wild 383 stroker runnin about 475 hp.. he passed with better numbes than my last time through!

i was also wondering about the tv cable myself... anybody have this carb with an auto hooked up? i am sure i could make my own bracket, but then i am gonna need to know how to adjust it!

The only other thing that I've heard of is that if your switching from a Throttle Body unit to a carburerated unit, is that you might have to change fuel pumps. I just did a 305 to 350 engine swap in my camaro, but I kept all of the computer junk or else I would have failed emissions.

Good luck, its a lot of work,

Mike

nope, goin carb to non computer carb, so everything is set there... i'll be getting the numbers off the block probably monday or tommorow. i'll post them up here and see if someone can find out some info on it for me.

Also, i am thinking i might just get a decent converter for it so if i decide to change the cam to a lumpier one, i can with out haveing to drop the tranny a second time... i was thinking maybe a b&m holeshot 2400 or something like that.. u guys think it is worth it? 334 bucks....
