Still lost about cam
What is the best cam swap for my '89, 305, peanut, TPI.
Some here and in the TPI bunch say that:
--The LT1 will do but I wont notice much change at all, and might even notice a decrease in performance.
--The ZZ# cams may be too much, heavy prom tuning and converter swap to boot
Anything has to be better than the peanut.
My wishes:
-Emissions are a must, I live in Illinois
-Prefer no PROM tuning
-Must be streetable, this is my daily driver
-A little rumble, the peanut is just way too mild
-Enough hp to make the swap worth my time (obviously)
-Must be an even swap, I'm totally stock
-This is not a street racer, I've barked the tires maybe twice in the 3 years I've had the car.
Ideas anyone?

I'd look in to Comp Cams Fuel Injection line. They are cams specially made for computer controlled engines. I'm not vey familiar with them, but I would pick a fairly mild one. Somewhere around 204/124ish dur @.050 and mid 400's lift.

For the best answer, you need to contact Comp Cams, or Crane Cams.
There's no better way to do it.
Even if you put the three most infamous engine builders in the same room together (you all know who I'm talking about) and asked them which cam is best, they'd each come out with some hair and a few ivorys missing. :sillylol:

Ok, I got bored so I looked in my SDPC catalog and found a few good mild roller cams. All duration is at .050".
Fuel Injection Cams
CC12-304-4 201/206* .406/.406 112 lsa 700-4,700 rpm
CC12-388-4 206/212* .425/.440" 112 lsa 1,000-5,000 rpm
It kind of depends on what rpm range you plan to be running in. With the stock TPI you won't be making much power past 4500 rpm, so you might go with the first one, it'll give you lots of torque (as much as you can get with a 305 ). Personally I would go with the second one. You'll have plenty of torque down low, but you'll pull hard to 4500 rpm.

OK, looked at the SDCP catalogue
What about:
LT4 HOT Cam, 218 / 228 Duration@ 0.050, Hydraulic Roller Camshaft - part #24502586 .
What computer mods would be required?
By 'slightly rough idle', do they mean lots of lope of just a little?
Does it matter that there is a fuel pump lobe?

A lot of people really like the LT1 cams on a 305. They claim to pass emmisions and not have to tune their prom.

I agree, the hot cam is way too big for a 305, let alone one with TPI. Also remeber with a new cam you'll need new valvesprings for the extra lift anf the faster ramp rates on an aftermarket cam. I'm sticking with my suggestion, but I have heard of LT1 cams working vey well in 305 TPI's. Some have hit mid 13's high 12's IIRC.

Go here:
Vortec Roller Cam
Find PN# 264HP on the page.
Just right for your 305 TPI. The price it right too.
It's a bolt in.
