Need some 383 information

Ok heres the thing. Im debating between a rebuilt 350 TPI, or a 383 from speedomotive.com. The 383 would have 420 HP at 5500 with a redline of 8000RPM i believe. I was wondering if the 383 would be the same as a 350TPI but faster, like would the computer work with it ect? I dont know alot about these engines. Which brings me to another question, would a 700R4 handle this? I might run it with nitrous. so thats about 520 HP and 500+ ft pounds of torque. Im leaning toward 350TPI for the obvious simplicity of getting parts for it. If i had the 383, would i have to order a custom chip, exhaust ect? Is it worth spending the money on a 383? The only thing im liking about the 383 is the power and redline, but if i rebuilt the 350TPI with forged pistons ect wouldnt that be good? Sorry for so many questions.

A 383 is a 350 bored .030 and it uses the 6 inch rod from a 400sb.Basicly the engines are identical.Except for the bore and stroke.
The 383 will have more kick then a 350 because"nothing beats cubic inches except more cubic inches"but you will need to run supreme fuel for best performance(I'm not saying it won't run on less then supreme though).
I'm not sure if the 700 can last with that much of a kick.
And last,I don't know about the chip but rebuilding the 350 isn't such a bad idea.

Thanks for the info Kevin, ive been researching 383s and yeah i guess its just a 350 with a stroker kit. The fuel and the transmission is whats keeping me away from the 383, whats the best auto transmission other than the 700R4? I would go manual, but i could just imagine that in bumper to bumper traffic. I think ill just get a 350 TPI and rebuild it, and then at a later time get a stroker kit..

Better get your facts straight before answering.

A 383 is a 350 block bored .030 over and uses a 400 crank that's been machined down to fit in a 350 block. You can use the 400's 5.56 rods with 350 pistons or use the 350's 5.7 rods with special strocker pistons.

Unless the 400's block is damaged (if you can find one), build a 400 instead of taking the crank for a 383.

Get the 383, and just make it carbed. Add a good RPM intake and Demon 750cfm. Have the 700R4 BUILT and it should handle the power. The 383 or the 355.............383 definatly!

Stephen,I am so sorry,I guess I'm just a regular dumbass.
Will you please forgive me?
I know the 383 uses the rods and CRANK from a 400.
I just forgot to mention the crank.
As for the rod length so I ****ed up,big deal.
Can you find it in your heart to forgive me all mighty one?

Now don't go blowing smoke from your ears.I'm just joking around with you. What kind of world would we live in if we didn't joke from time to time.

Besides, we are all here for the same reason so don't go throwing this "better get your facts straight before answering"thing at me.I'm here to help where I can and get help when I need it.

I got done with my 383 swap about 3 weeks ago. I also ordered mine from speed-o-motive and I can tell you that they build supreme motors. Mine is very tight and runs beautifully. I wouldn't get too radical of a cam because you will be setting codes and have huge problems with your knock sensor. I got a Competition Cams "Compucam" It has enough lift to kick you in the *ss but doesn't have lobe seperation that causes codes to be set off. And one more thing, your motor will not come with a timing pointer, I highly recommend buying one and timing it right (right around 6-7 degrees BTDC). If you want to get a hold of me and discuss the swap then e-mail me and I'll get back with you.

The 700R4 can handle close to 700-800 horsepower built right using the correct parts. I have had great luck with Art Carr. Get ready to lay down some dough...

Why would you go backwards in technology and performance by installing a carburetor? A carb like that on that combo will never give you the power, torque, drivability, economy, or idle quality of fuel injection. Emissions testing? What's that? Oh, yeah, that will be fun changing his fuel system and throttle linkage without hacking it, too.

I can't think of why you would recomm...oh, wait,...you're right, it's cheaper and any mechanic named Darryl and his other brother Darryl can work on it...

So that's why I know of anothewr Z that has a 383 and a Demon 850cfm that goes 10.6's.....the only thing you are right on is emissions. You can have torque, power and good idle with a carb if it is set up correctly.....if you want...I can have him come show you?

There is some **** flying around here. I have done extensive research into the 383 motor. I am going to be building a TPIS Mini-Ram fed one for my 87 IROC here soon. So, where I learned my stuff from was mostly by asking questions to KNOWLEDGEALBE people and doing internet research, thats what you need to do. You will find there are a lot of people here who don't have a clue what they are talking about and are not educated on the science of engine building. It is better to spend more money to get more performance than it is to just throw an engine together and get 5000 miles out of it before you start messing things up.
And by the way, going with EFI (any form, TPI, MR, SR) is always better than going carb.

Polecat: Okay, and I know Jerry Hogan from here in Chicago runs 9.70's with factory TPI setup on a 355...big deal. Pro Stocks run dual Dominators, but they only need to get from A to B as fast as they can. My point is that 95% of the guys on these message boards want the following:

1) As fast as they can go depending on $.
2) Drivability.
3) Idle quality.
4) Reliability.
5) Best mpg they can get (try that).
6) Emissions compatability.
7) Tuneability (ecm sensors adjust for temperature, vacuum, air density, throttle position, timing retard, etc. without turning a screwdriver).

Polecat, I apologize for the "dork" statement. I just felt it was silly to recommend "downgrading" the technology of the guy's car. The fastest NMCA and NSCA cars and trucks have EFI, ASA stock cars run injected LS1's, and SCCA Trans Am cars are allowing it. Just wait until NASCAR does! I am not starting crap with you, if you choose to run a carb, more power to you. I used to run them, too - on my GTO when I was 18...

GMI,
I too apologize, the "dork" statement did pi$$ me off, and I went off. I just had my personal opinion, and got pi$$ed when you made the statement you did because that was my choice.
I like the carbs, and haven't dealt with alot of the TPI stuff that much.....just older guy that plays more with carbs I guess.
Sorry again and see you on the board later..........

There's an easy solution for the TPI vs. Carb question.........get one of each like I did!! I like them both!! The 383 is non-emmission and burn lots of fuel!! The TPI has better throttle response and better fuel economy. But, the 383 with AFR heads hauls buns.......

Good luck!

if you have the extra money the 383 is worth it. but 8000 rpm redline with a 383??? someone said they use the 6 inch rods from a 400, incorrect. but the correction was also wrong. it's not 5.56, it's 5.65. you can use any rod you pick from the 5.65 to 6.125 as long as you but the right pistons for it. as for the crank, almost no one with any common sense uses the 400 crank anymore. better off buying a 3.75 stroke crank to fit your mains then waste the time and money of having the 400 crank turned down just to have an adapter at the rear main. in high rpm, the exra cubic inch isn't noticed as much as it is in the midrange and off idle. much more fun around town and off the line with the 383.

Hey, Zippy, check your stats again. I am running stock 400 5.565" rods...And for what it's worth, my 383 cost exactly ZERO more than my old 355 did.
