car eating spark plug wires need help

I have a 91 camaro rs 3.1, currently it is melting down the rear two plug wires at the middle of the boot and i cant figure out why. It melts them down in about a week to where the car starts missing. I took it to a repair shop, it was the first time in my life i have taken my car to someone but i didnt want to fool with the exaust. any ideas? i had a new manifold and egr gasket put on but its not helping.
thanks
chris

i'd hit each port of the manifold with a temp gun and see if the readigns aren't higher then the othres, my bet they are. if so i'd guess you have a lean condition on the cylinder(s) in question. trouble shoot it from there.

Does your 3.1 have coil packs or a distributor?

reply to eating spark plug wires

There is no hear sheild on the wire itself, should there be?
It has a external coil, right about the wires or beside the egr valve
thanks

Not on the wire, but on the boots. The 3.1l has a long fluted heavy boot for the spark plug end of the wire. Over this is supposed to be a metal shield that is shaped like the boot (fluted and all). The bottom end of the shield plugs firmly into the spark plug well on the head.

The shield is the full length plus of the plug wire boot. If you don't have these I could see that the boots may be in trouble.

Also check the rear exhaust manifold bolts, they like to break off (all on their own!). As Ede mentioned you may also have other problems that is contributing to the melt-down.

RBob.
