Some more probs after cam swap.

For those who dont know, i swapped an L98 cam out of a vette into my L03.

The car is running Better. BUT...

1. Hard to keep running after startup. Sounds like either i swapped in a 280 580/580 or the timing is way retarded ( but its not, the timing is fine) and its smokes like hell. once I give it some throttle it's fine..evens out and idles normally. I have no Idea what to do w/this.

2. in first gear I have nothing undr 2800-3000. Barely breaks the tires loose. From there on it pulls great, through all gears.
My guess is that it's the crapola 273's. I dont think they are playing well w/ the cam.

Ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks,
Rock

Yeah my idle is kinda ****ty to. Sounds cool. But sometimes it feels like it's about to die. ANywayz nothing is wrong. I never died once. And as for the power things. That's probably just an effect of the cam. Cause that's the same as mine. It doesn't really have any hp lower than 2500. And yes it's also deffinelty about eh gears. Cause the cam just gave you high end and took away some low end. So the gears are killing you. Maybe you've seen my post on the NOn tech board. Where 3.27 w/posi. Changed my e/t from 16.2 to 15.6 I later hit 15.3@91.11 with my timing bump up.

see its posts like these (and a lack of talent) that keep me from getting serious with my car. Ive already got a cam, but I cant keep my car down for weeks while I sort out cam swap problems......plus no one seems to be able to tell me what springs will work with my cam. Ive also decided if I go ahead and swap the cam, I should change the heads to the 305 torquers too

I do not think your car should be running like that. Sounds like a vacuum leak to me, they will do exactly that. If you had a TPI car I'd say perhaps a misadjusted TPS or IAC, but I frankly don't know what exactly the TBI has in the way of sensors, etc.

I'm running a bigger cam than that in my 86 305 TPI IROC (204/214 @.050, .420/.442). It does not have any kind of driveability problems. Now you might have lost some low end power, and I'm sure the 2.73s are hurting you, but my guess is that will pick up some from where it is now at least when you sort out what the heck is wrong w/ your idle setup.

You're going to need to talk to a TBI guru to get it sorted out, as I don't know enough about TBI, but it is definitely some kind of tuning problem, and is not normal.

Have you set your Idle air? I put a cam in my LO3 (check my sig) and that was one of the first things i did. Mine definately fells like it's gonna die but it rarely does. I've had it happen once or twice. Also check your MAP sensor connections. Pull your codes from your computer. After a cam swap you will have codes set. Definately make sure you don't have a vacuum leak, that can be a big problem. Try a few if the things we've listed then come back to us and we'll keep helping till it's fixed. Good luck man!

Later,
Lars

Lars has a point, adjust your minimum idle. Infact, re adjust everything and play with your timing till it runs best. I have a feeling that the cold startup programming in the chip could be a little off.

Ive checked everywhere for vaccum leaks. Im going to adjust the Idle air again but nothing seems to help. I think the one thing that I did not point out is that when the car is cold (morning) it cranks fine. The rest of the day it cranks like crap.
