My tires rub in reverse

My front left tire and probably my front right tire rub horribly when I back up in reverse, and turn the wheels more than about 15 degrees.

Why?

It does not do this in a forward gear.

This is on my 86 firebird, all stock.

Ok. Did you ever seriously damage a tire from it? So far I haven't had much problem. IT's embarrassing though, people think there is something seriously wrong with your car.

nah, just don't steer too hard. In my cars it just rubs the plastic inner fender. On the formula it just rubbed thru.

I had 225/60/15s up front on my Z, and they rubbed like you wouldn't believe! In reverse, the passenger side would sometimes grab the edge of the rocker panel and it ended up pulling it down about 2". (totally lame) Not to mention how worn the edges of the tires were. It looked sweet with those big *** meats on front, but I had to go down to 205/60/15s to fix it. Even now, when fully cranked in reverse, they still catch every once in a while. But the guy @ the Goodyear store said if it doesn't fix the problem to bring 'em back and I could new tires that will fix it for free. So I think I'll put 10 or 20K miles on them before I do that and then get new rockers and linings for the wheel wells. (it rubbed the s**t outta those, too!) My advice: downsize.
