Expensive machine work ?
I called the local machine shop to get prices on drilling and tapping a two bolt block for splayed 4 bolt mains. They wanted $250. Does this seem a little high for just drilling and tapping 6 holes? The align boring is only $100, which seems reasonable, but $250 seems expensive. Has anyone ever inquired on pricing for this labor? Any help is appreciated. By the way, this brings the total cost of splayed caps to around $500. Worth it, I dont know.

Sounds about right..my machine shop quoted me $525 to install the caps. And that was with me supplying the Milodon splayed cap kit.

Thanks
I never said it was easy. I had just recently asked two of my friends, (who are machinists but not automotive) and they had told me that it sounded a little high. I just wanted some other opinions. Thanks for the responses.

Get the correct drill bushing, center punch, and mark/drill them yourself. Use kerosene as your tapping fluid. It isn't rocket science.
I'd tend to agree with your machinist buddies, but you have to realize that most of the work will be done by hand, so you're paying for the time at whatever their hourly rate may be. Align boring is about a Franklin no matter where you go, unless you want a true-centered bore, which will usually cost a little more. The NASCAR/Busch & NHRA engine builder up the street wants $210 for a true-center align bore, and that may be giving me a little break.
