New intake mani and carb...no clearance...

I put on an Edelbrock Performer and Holley 600 CFM Vacuum Secondary carb. I ordered the 14x3" Drop Base intake cleaner assembly from Summit...Intake and carb are on....air cleaner doesn't fit under hood. I went to an auto supplier today to see if they could get an assembly that would fit, they found some, but none would clear the electric choke. So now what? Should I just use this as justification to a 3" Cervini Hood?

I have the Performer with a Holley 650 and it just clears(about 3/16" between the stud and the hood) but using it as justification for a new hood. If you have the $$$ go for it!

If I was in your shoes I'd prolly cut a square in the hood and put some sort of a scoop over it... Of course depending on how well it works and how cheap you are are all deciding factors.

Things sticking up out of hoods are cool.

Well some people said they had Performer RPM's and still have stock hood clearance and others said they couldn't get clearance even with the Performer, so I guess I was one of the unlucky ones. Income tax should be here soon, so I guess I have to go new hood. *shucks*

I had to use a 14" x 2" filter to get the necessary clearance. Summit has a reusable one for ~$26.
It's p/n SUM-239142.

i had a very similar problem. i needed to use an air cleaner spacer to clear the choke, but with it, it didnt clear the hood. we sanded down the spacer to the absolute shortest height. it still didnt quite clear. then, we cut out some of the reinforcement on the hood, and everything clears fine now

How tall is your air filter? When I got a new intake, I had to ditch the 4'' filter and go to a 3'' one.

I have a Vortech headed 350, with a Performer RPM intake and a 600 CFM Holley. I use a Mr. Gasket 14x2 non-drop base aircleaner and it fits under teh stock hood by about 1/16th of an inch. Thenon drop base clears all choke, throttle, Trans linkage.

Ive done my fair share of reading, and fromwhat I have seen teh height of teh aircleaner has made little gains in HP. IMO I would rather run a smaller cleaner that gets dirty more often then deal with fabricating a hood scoop etc...

Use a 14 x 2.5" filter. You don't need a 3" tall filter.
Any 14x2.5" $10 paper replacement filter is more than enough to run 12sec quarter mile times. You need no more than this.

The air cleaner base below is the lowest, best fitting one available. You can still buy them from restoration sources.
Adds another 1/2" clearance over the common aftermarket drop bases.

I just have some $15 drop base I got at a local parts place, clears my holley 750s choke just fine. Looks to be a 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch drop. Running a 14x3 element on with a Performer RPM for Vortecs. Interesting that some people can't get Performers to fit. Sounds like you just need a different/better drop base, guess the summit one doesn't doesn't drop enough?

Ok, I went to a parts store today, and they said they couldn't find an assembly that would fit. Fortunately, I ran into the mechanic who worked on my car today and he said all I needed was to go to a 1.5" or 2" tall filter element. Well I'm glad I just saved $400+ on a hood, because my car has some other issues that I'll be able to take care of with that money. So when I get the shorter assembly, hopefully it'll fit.

Hey Fbird 88, i wonder what kind of airhorn to lid clearance you'll see with an extree drop base and a 2.5" filter element. Air does flow down into a carb, not sideways. More important even than filter area is some space for air to come in and make the turn to go straight into the carb.

I agree, there does need to be a certain amount of space above the carb inlet to allow good airflow. But...

Because of the special contoured shape of the base there is enough airflow clearance to make good power with a 2.5" filter.
This is the same aircleaner used on the factory 427 L-88 vette motor from the 60's. Well in excess of 500hp (with headers).
The bowl vent tubes may need to be shortened on aftermarket carbs, as were the factory holleys of the era.

The 67 /72 corvette had a low hood clearance hood problem so this design was worked out for us by GM many years ago.
All the aftermarket stuff seams to be cheap attemps at this.
I just keep moving this same aircleaner from car to car over the years.

Here is one of many sources that sell the l88/l72/Z28 aircleaner base.

L-88 drop base

Do an internet search for corvette air cleaner base.

Ok, the 2" filter did the trick. Does one of those K & N Xstream Flow Lids or whatever they are called, just fit on top of any 14" air cleaner? I think i might get one of those on top.

I am going to be looking at this problem over the next couple of days.

I am putting on an Edlbrock Performer #2101 intake, Holley 600 cfm model 4160, so my dual snorkel won't fit.
