Ring Job

If I were to do a ring job on my car... would I NEED to remove the crank (the heads have been removed) , since I KNOW that I will have to remove the rods.... what do I need to know about setting and torquing NEW rod bearings ?? it's an '89 305, stock rods/crank, ...
on a different note.. what is the best stuff to use to CLEAN combustion chambers and piston tops (i may as well since the engine is out and open) THANKS GUYS...
