Exhaust has that kind of popping tone on deceleration...
Just curious to know what causes this....you know if you rev it up to like 4grand in second gear and then let off the gas...it gargles and pops a little bit.
I checked my base timing yesterday and it looked to be way....off. So I changed ( retarded) it back to 14 degrees at idle. Before it was way to advanced. It did not ping for some reason though. Now it does this popping business and I hate it....sound like glasspacks.
I think that maybe when I had it advanced it was set right..but I think it slipped into more advance... I could have sworn I set it at 14 degrees before. ( maybe my distributor advance springs are stretched out ? they are 6k miles old, doesn't seem likely but you never know) So I think it ran better before and it sure did not pop.
Maybe I should tune it by ear? Advance it till it pings and then back it out until it stops?

Oh yeah...
I know some of you are going to say it's the exhaust...but it can't be since it wasn't doing it before, and now it is.
THIS IS MY 84' WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BTW.

Are you checking timing with the tan wire disconnected? You RETARDED it to 14º? What was it before? That seems kind of high.

Tan wire...etc..
Car is non computer controlled.
Timng is set at 14 degrees BTDC, I retarded it from what looked like about 22 degress or so.
Distributor gives 20 degrees....don't under stand the pops....I'm goona set the timing at like 6 degrees when it stops raining and see if it does it.

i think the popping is from vacume sucking in more gas when you let off the gas and dosn't burn completely. it goes out the exhaust port and gets ignited in the headers or manifolds. i'm not sure if this is correct but thats what someone told me when i had a similar post. mine did it more whith less mining also, i guess thats just the way it is.
my dosn't do it as much now that i have headers because of the pipes being separated. my brothers 97 with an lt1 and flowmaster exhaust does it a lot when its parked but not when your driving. it sounds great, its real deep and a rumble like booboom boom.

Maybe I need to just tune the timing by ear and be done with it.

i don't think you can set the timing by the poping very good, most engines are different and do it more than others. setting it by ear is hard to do and most likely you wont get it perfect. my camaro does it around 8* and my 78 malibu with a 305 dosn't do it at all.
