Epoxy paint? Fiberglass resin? Rust profing Q's

Im not exactly sure where to post this, but I was wondering what type of coating or paint (besides powdercoating) that you can paint things in to rust proof them. Like control arms, sway bar, etc. things that are exposed to water alot. Would it work if I sandblasted say my control arms, then covered them in fiberglass resin, then painted them? Also, does anyone know where to buy epoxy paint?

There is always powder coating. It can be expensive but it is bullet-proof.

I painted the underside of my 84 with POR-15. It's about $30/quart but it actually turns rust back into gray metal. It is also highly durable and requires little cleaning of rusted parts. Worth the money in my book.

I've never heard of coating metal with fiberglass resin. Problem is that you would have to "scuff" the dried resin with sandpaper before painting, sound like a pine in the *** to me.

Yea, I thought of that too. I was thinking it might work to scuff it by sandblasting it, just by holding the sandblaster a little farther away from the surface so as not to remove the coating. Im currently in the process of helping a friend sandblast all the rust/crud out of the engine bay of his 65 mustang GT, and we'll have plenty of parts to try it on :P

PPG's "DP" series of epoxy primers would be an excellent choice IMHO. Available in different colors and tougher than than automotive topcoat paints, these coatings are used often for chassis and chassis components. I have often used "DP 90" on restorations. It's satin black in color and gives a neat, factory appearance. Available thru local PPG auto paint dealers. http://www.ppg.com/refinishftpsite/docs/p-196.pdf

I don't know how fancy you are planning to get, but Marhide (sp? maybe Mar-hyde) makes a good product called "One Step" that converts rust to a paintable primer. It works very well. You need only to remove LOOSE scale and paint it on (done with a brush, usually)- then put paint over that. I have had good luck with this product.

i finished painting my engine bay with the rustoleum gloss black oil based paint that comes in a gallon for like 14-15 bucks. granted u need to get rid of most if not all the rust but i can tell u that this stuff does dry very thick. i am very pleased with the turnout in my engine bay. here is a pick of it only the fire wall is somewhat clean. the rest is really dusty but underneath it shines like a million $.
