What is this connector?

It's located down by the steering gears on the driver's side... I'm talking about the weatherproof connector with green and brown wires running to it. I had cut it apart a few months ago but I don't remember why. Also, what is the thick, red wire for?

It looks like the harness extension connector for the EVAP canister purge solenoid.

EDIT: If that were a darker green, it might be for the fan relay. My monitor's color rendition isn't that great in low-res mode. Come to think of it, I don't think there is an extension connector for the fan relay, and it should be on the opposite side, IIRC.

I believe that I cut apart this connector when I set up my dual fans -- my '86 originally had a single fan. The weird thing is, I can't seem to locate the green wire that goes into the car's main wire harness... the brown one is there, but the green is nowhere to be found (the picture doesn't really show that, though).

My stock fan relay is on the passenger side, like you said. The green wire running to it is very dark green with a white stripe. The green wire in my picture is more of a medium shade.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe those are for the lighting system... Head lights maybe ? It's been a long time.....

It's not for the lights, i know that for sure. When i bought my car that wire was disconnected and the lights worked fine.

I took apart the wiring harnesses and discovered that the connector IS part of the lighting circuit. I don't really see it's purpose, though. There are two brown wires and a green wire in the harness. Both brown wires and the green wire are factory spliced into several of the same color, and each individual wire runs to each headlight (the splice is located in the headlight wells). The connector is there just to break up one of the brown wires -- but power can still get through to the headlight circuit, which is why holmes677's headlights still worked, even with that connector unplugged. The weird thing is, the green wire that is part of the connector is a farce. There's no green wire coming from the harness to go into the connector.

Hope I wasn't too confusing . Here's my diagram of it.

i forget which color is the ground, but if the ground went bad, the previous owner may have just spliced it into the other one. i guess the same argument would go for the power, though in firebirds i thought the headlights had separate fuses, so it might now work.

It's possible, but these were definitely factory splicings... it even had that reinforced electrical tape over it. You mentioning the Firebird's lighting system makes me think though. Perhaps this connector is used on the Firebirds since they have the pop-up headlights (maybe for the headlight motors?), and it's just "nullified" on the Camaros. I have no idea if that's correct but I've learned that anything's possible on these cars .

I was pretty sure they were for the lights. probley fog lamp application or something, They activate from the head lamp switch so that they can't be run unless your head lamps are on.
