Help with my 2.73 to 3.42 swap please!
I'm going to swap the gears and posi on my 92 GTA and I'm bascially rebuilding the entire rear end and I want to make sure I have everything covered before I begin. Here is what I have:
1. New Posi (SLP, 64501T $99)
2. New 3.42 Gears (Motive Performance, $175) w/driven gear (GM, 25513048 $3)
3. Deluxe Gear Install Kit (Ratech, $129.99) Includes: Pinion shims, carrier shims, crush sleeve, pinion seal, pinion nut, ring gear bolts, cover gasket, pinion & carrier bearings, and wheel bearings and seals.
4: Royal Purple w/posi additive
5. Replace rear brake pads and turn drums.
Does that cover EVERYTHING?
Thanks!
Oh, I also read something about needing new "bearing races", what are those? Are they included with the install kit I'm buying and are just called something different?

Don't forget that you'll have to recalibrate your governor in the transmission. Get the B&M Governor Recalibration kit. If you don't do this your trans will shift too early. Set it so your trans will shift at least 5800 rpm.

Thanks! I didn't think of that I'll try and set it to more like 5,500 for my engine.
Well now how much sooner would it shift? Right now it will shift at 5,200 WOT and I plan on having my tranny professional built soon anyway, can I wait until then to have that done or should I really do it now? It would be about 6-8 months before I rebuild my tranny...

It won't hurt to wait till you rebuild your trans. It just won't have the full effect of the gear change but still you'll notice an improvement. Just wait till your governor is calibrated and you'll think its Awesome!
You'll probably have to leave your car in regular drive while in town it'll shift too early in overdrive, that is if your use to leaving it in overdrive while crusing.
Since your having it rebuilt let the trans shop mess with it. Believe me It's loads of fun trying to calibrate it yourself!

Since you're buying bearings in a kit, yes, the races will (should anyway) be part fo the set.
Seems you have the parts covered, do you have the necessary tools as well? Do you have setup procedures for the R&P?

Cool, I fell allot better now knowing the races are included.
No I don't have any tools or procedures, I plan on having a friend of mine who is a mechanic to help me with the swap in his shop. I will of course listen to suggestions though to make 100% sure we do it right the first time....

You'll be fine.., you currently have a 2-seires carrier, but the SLP unit is (I'm assuming) a 3-series carrier.
