306 HP?...or not!
Hi, I have an 89' TransAm 305 HP 5.0L...or do I? I've been browsing the web and came across something that said the 305 rating is not really how many true horses the car has, and that it is really 2 hundred...something? My mom has the 99 Trans Am and that is the 320, and that car is ridiculously faster than mine...soooo, is it true, that I don't have a 305? If so, what do I have, and how do I make it a 305?

305 refers to your engine size in ci. Not HP, you can check your HP rating on the homepage in the tech data section. I think it's like 190 or so. That is not rear wheel HP either.
If you want to be faster start with a free flowing complete exhaust.
Headers and a cat-back.

Good point, TAs did come with TBI, pop the hood, do you see a black circular housing on top the engine, where the filter is? Or is there something else?
The TBI will have that black enclosure, which is where your air filter is.

by the black circurlar housing you mean the air filter cover, if thats the case, then yes it's there, bottom line, for either of the two, how much horsepower do both of these give out, because my car isn't that slow to give out only 190. i just want to know the bottom line on how much horsepower i have. also...is this the same rating the 1999 TA would have also? So are they "lying" about the 320 that it gives out?

I'd venture to say that you have 170hp and 255tq.
I wouldnt say GM is 'lying' about the 320hp that the TA is putting out. The final output varies in production, but most LS1's are dynoing at 290hp at the rear wheels.

Not to sound like an azz, but I bet the feeling you have of it "not being slow for 190 hp", is that it does have some TQ, which you've prolly haven't driven a V8 car before? I assume? this is what is making it feel faster to you, that car is most likely a low 16 sec car at best.
Like iroc22 said, you have an L03, 170hp.
edited, ok, so maybe I jsut thought, and um, I guess you've driven your mom's 99 TA?

wow so if i were to race some honda or toyota they would slaughter me in other words? i can't believe this, so what are some cheap mods i can do to make my car at least 220, 240? i already bought exhaust a flowmaster cat back system thats 2 1/2" but i guess i'm gonna return that and go for the 3" as someone else is suggesting from another thread, so that'll give me what, like 10? so we got 180 now oh boy

Well, it depends on the Honda, really.
Like i said in the other post start with a Hooker cat-back and get a set of headers, that should help you out well, and is a great starting point.
If you want 240hp, you'll prolly need new heads the stock ones suck no matter what. Also, a cam swap will be necessary. LT1 cams are cheap alternatives.

Mark, I don't know about you but a set of Vortec Heads, Vortec intake and a LT4 HotCam kit would do the trick for this guy? Checkout www.sdpc2000.com for the Heads and intake.
And http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...d=993&pid=1900 for the LT4 cam. this will get get you really close if not pass 240HP. I believe they sell LT1 if you really want one.

Try searches on the TBI board (the board aimed specifically at your type of engine).
LOTS of good information. More info about TBI than you could possibly ever absorb.
Post a few SPECIFIC questions on the TBI board once you've done some research, and you will get quality answers for free.
Ain't the internet great?
