Studded Tires???????

I'm not sure if I should post questions about tires in here but here it goes anyway.I got studded tires put on to my 91TA today and the guy who put them on said that I should take it real easy for the first couple of weeks, especially when it comes to taking corners on dry pavement. He said that it is the same as driving on ice with bald tires.Any truth to that?Is there anyone else out there who had to resort to studs for crappy Canadian winters?Curious in Calgary.

Have you asked the people on the Ontario message board? They'd probably be able to help you out a lot more! I think what the tire installer said makes sense. There's no rubber there to meet the asphalt, all stud. After a while the tire flexes a little more and the studs wear down some. Then some of the rubber will touch the road. Isn't that a little overkill for the snow?

Hey there fellow Quebecer!Originally form Gaspe.Anyway,I know that the studs are overkill,Calgary winters suck.Trust me Quebec road crews know how to handle winter.I lived there for 16 years and when it comes to comparing snow removal,Calgary has their heads up their buts.Anyway, the reasoning behind the studs was due to a little incident on Monday when we had a small dump of snow and lets just say I got tapped from behind by a Honda Civic trying to access the same alley that I was and they figured that I could get movin a little faster and ummmmmmmm I didnt, therefore I got tapped. No damage(PHEW).So I decided to be extra carefull and get the studs cause if I crack up the pride and joy I will no doubt crack up too!Mon Dieu!!!!!Oh thanks for the advice------never even thought to look in the Ontario posts(DUH).

So far, even though they are a few hours old I give it a good shot of gas coming up my street which is still coated in a layer of ice.The car normally would have been totally doin 360's but they cut into the ice like a hot knife through butter. So far I'm lovin it.It handled like a 4x4.Oh and yeah, once I get them broke in a little more doin the roman candle bit is definately tempting(hehehe)

You could really enhance the traction by having the tires siped (even with the studs). Many tire stores can do the work, and is makes a big difference in marginal traction conditions.

Many of us in the lower 48 don't have a lot of choice, since steel studs have been banned due to excessive wear on the pavement. You used to be able to ride your scooter on 100 around Milwaukee without even touching the handlebars, since the heavy front end of the Glide would just follow the ruts ground into the pavement all winter long.

I put my studded tires on last week. There great for ice driving, if you take your time. I suggest as soon as the ice/snow melts removing them ASAP. They wear down real quick and the studs can pop out on dry pavement especially if you try a burnout.
