shaft mount 1.6 roller rockers
Here is the story,
I am in the middle of putting together my 355 chevy and have come into a few problems. the biggest would be I don't think I can use the rocker arms that I have planed on using.
the rockers are a shaft mount design instead of the stud setup. It is a real nice set but it will not clear the head studs, they work just fine with head bolts but the studs are taller where the stud protrudes through the nut.
The rockers and shafts mount to a aluminum mounting pad that runs the length of the head and mounts to the same holes used for the rocker studs. this passes right over the center head bolt holes and there is not enough clearance by about a 1/4in when using studs.
I guess my question would be should I mill the clearance I need out of the mounting bracket(I know it is hard to viualize with no picture,I will try to post one later today if possible). I just think that it will weaken in though. Or should I just sell the shaft mount rocker setup and go with a stud mount rocker setup with a stud girdle.
It is just that this is a really beefy setup and would love to use it but it just doesnt seem possible with the studs I am using, if any one would beinterested in these let me know just be sure your using head bolts and not studs.
thanks,

Are these the ones made by Clinch? Have the aluminum blue stands? I think that's the brand.
If so, the stands have some room to be milled out. Also, the head studs can be shortened. Actually, we did both.
There is one thing to be VERY careful about when installing, or removing those rocker shafts. The pushrods HAVE TO BE LOOSE or you will break the shaft where the allen bolt holds it down.
There can be NO pressure from the springs when you tighten or loosen those shafts down onto the stands! They WILL break!
Now that that's clear, also look at the rockers real close. Some are slightly offset while others appear to be centered. I assume this is one purpose since the set came out half and half.

Ask this guy about them maybe. . .

Thanks for the quick replys,
I thought about cutting down the ARP studs but wasn't sure if that would have any affect on their strength. I suppose it wouldn't, just wasn't sure. so if other people have cut their studs and that worked I suppose I will try the same. If there is any way I can use these I want to.
Also thanks for the advice on tightening the shafts down. I wouldn't have thought they would break but I will be carful.
to any one who has used this design, how have you liked it, problems, praises, etc.

I called ARP just to check if it was O.K. to cut the stud down to clear the rocker bracket. They said cut it all you need, even flush with the top of the nut was fine, just don't heat the stud up over 800 degrees. I suppose I will just use a hacksaw to cut it close then use a file to get it exactly to the length I need.
Thanks, another obstical completed

O.K.
I cut the studs down to the length I needed. I went as far as I felt comfortable (almost level with the nuts), then ground with a dremel a little more clearance out of the rocker stand, not a lot but about .020.
It all clears fine now, with even a little extra clearance. These rockers really do look sharp. I'm satasfied
